So does any piece of equipment work with the HDMI cable such as an up scalealbe dvd player?

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, or its looks like I am assuming you to be a bit thick BUT:

Have you actually gone onto the settings menu on the PS3 start page, and set it to output through the HDMI cable ?

A mate had the same problem, thought his PS3 wouldn't work on his HD telly as he could only get in via the scart socket, then I asked him if he was sure he'd set it on the options menu correctly ..........

shouldn't matter where you bought the tv - everywhere is covered by the sale of goods act and therefore you are entitled to a refund if it is not fit for purpose.
