Default Mountain Bike Advice

Just after a little advice on some bikes that I have seen. I won’t be using the bike in the week so I’m not that interested how they ride on the road, but I will not be doing any crazy downhill stuff. Just riding around the lakes etc on paths.

My first thoughts were towards this Cannondale http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp;jsessionid=2DF90168B069972B1C81BA5BEA2 7AD4D.tc8?style=87679
Having spoken to the guy in the shop I was told that is was a very good frame and this is the one they use up until they go to Carbon. The suspension can be locked off, but the gears are very “entry level” not something I liked the sound of. Thoughts?

The main thing that put me off this bike is that I was told that is rode ‘long’ i.e. was not suitable for my frame as I have quite a short body and long legs and was told to look towards Scott or Specialized.

These are the 2 I have looked at;
Specialized ; http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=86115

Scott; http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=86486

Would really appreciate any advice, or suggestions of other bikes. Not really wanting to spend a fortune, but don’t want something that won’t last or is poorly built.

Nick.

I got seriously confused in the shop when he said the gears were entry level, another £100 gets you this, etc etc, we ended up looking at bikes that were nearly £2k. I dont understand bike gears at all apart from my old bike had 21

To be totally honest with you they all work the same....

Only difference your getting other than price is materials and look, a budget one changes gear just as the top of the range one will.

It wont be as smooth in operation, be as light or eventually wear as well either.
Cheap chainset(front rings ) will be made from stamped alloy where a top end one will have cnc rings.

I always look at the overall package things like bars stem gears can be changed.

Look for one which rides and looks how you want it... it is a budget bicycle but will do what you want...
