No need to have tuned cars there in Switzerland, we have quite large ammount of powerful police cars, such as Volvos (with 5cyl turbo engine), Toyota Avensis V6 engined, BMWs, Audis, ... but also old shit cars like Vauxhall Astras from the early 90s (of course with civil paint), Smarts, ...

We even serviced a Seat Leon Cupra R when I was working for Seat which was used to be a border guard car (all black with tinted windows). Makes you think next time you push the pedal to watch behind if you don't see a "strange" car.

Yes, they are really nasty over there, even heard stories where they used "tuned" cars with decals on the car, lowered, and nice exhaust. They get the engine up in the revs and makes a hard start, so you try to follow them, and suddenly they put their blue light on the roof and ask you to go on the side of the road. Pure truth.

as said before in the post the police Volvo T5's had different front brakes, but power wise they are the same as a standard civilian car.

www.vpcuk.org.uk this will tell you all you need to know about police t5's. The cars are all standard, although there are some exceptions, in certain counties where vehicle crime is quite high they had better suspension and better brakes but it all depends upon where the car started its life, but i believe it can be quite hard to get hold of the details from police about the cars after they have been sold and this is why there are myths about police cars being re-mapped etc

Hi All

I worked with volvo for 8 years and we had the police contract.

I can confirm that the engine had no upgrades (Standard power)

The brakes got upgraded on the 850 estate to the same spec as the
V70. The police has 2 crashes at high speed due to the old style brakes.

The new V70 come from the factory as police cars. so the spec does vary
from car to car all depends on what job the vehicle will be doing.

i worked at volvo and we serviced essex police cars, the police spec volvos had uprated bushes !!!, and also had a syncromesh in reverse on the manual cars to allow them to select reverse when still going forwards

the electrics for the sirens ect was all dealt with by the police so that has fuck all to do with dealers,,,, not sure about pads though but DEFFO the bushes,,, if you give the chassis number to a volvo dealer you can discover if its ex old bill or not too

thats what i DO know for a fact,,,, not rumor or " i got a mate", i SOLD police spec bushes to a off duty copper for hes car he bought off the force,,,, he also paied for it with a metropolice credit card too !!!

Some are tuned but the majority are as they leave the factory for the gp.
Police spec pads are nothing more than the ones the POLICE decide they want on thier response cars, eg Warwickshire police use EBC YELLOWSTUFF, but you didn't hear it here.
Volvo or anyother manufacturer are not going to do any chassis work for the plod as there is just not enough money to pay for it, they just normally use the heaviest duty stuff from the manufacturers whose cars they are using.
As said sometimes they are fitted with a larger engine but tuning doesn't normally go on to a great degree, though each force decides itself.
They are more concerned with resale these days, if a ex plod car was sold as modified and had a accident that may be partly to blame on the mods, they would be sued, this is also the primary reason for going for cars other than white now.

when buying parts for my s60 d5 i asked the parts guys about this (volvo main dealer) they said pretty much same as above... no engine mods.. sometimes the T5s have the diesel springs/pads/clutch fitted as they're heavier duty. better suited to the heavy loads the cop cars carry.... other than that - pretty standard.... that sort of ties in with what ginge mentioned earlier, re bushes......

In Harrrow theres a unmarked 5 series which slammed stupidly, Also a bright orange audi which looks standard, also a primera and mondeo which have limo tints at the rear. Theres a couple of others floating about two all unmarked and different colours but look standard.

Not the ones we sold West Midlands police, unless they have them re-mapped after purchase??????

Mind you when we did the warranty items on them, the VAG-COM full scan showed standard boost pressure, cos we checked!!!!!

I work for Volvo and i can confirm the police T5s DO NOT have anymore power than a standard "customer" T5.

UK Police spec T5s (V70s) have...

1 - Uprated front and rear suspension (thicker spprings 2mm and thicker anti roll bars).
2 - They also run the biggest brake option available to the vehicle/rim size
3 - Passenger rear view mirror fitted to outer left front A-post
4 - Interior/Police spec trim to accomidate radio equipment etc.
5 - Brake pad wear sensors (the pad material is completly standard)

no, they had 2 crashes because they wee driving outwith the limits of their vehicle and/or didnt leave enough room, something the police are shocking for

Wish some bugger would uprate our cars.

Best one of our 'fleet' used to be the Skoda vrs, until it bost and went back to Skoda, as most repairs other than servicing are done under warranty.

Skoda waved their magic wand and now its shocking, always seems to be off the road for gearbox problems.

Got a 530d (auto) and a 330d (auto). Very odd cars, especially the 530.

And lastly a good old s60, doesn't like bends.

"the Skoda octavia vrs police cars are all chipped to 210bhp"

I won't be racing the local Police silver one then

"the VAG-COM full scan showed standard boost pressure, cos we checked"

Mapping them doesn't increase the boost pressure. It just changes the map on the ECU for more HP.

Does anyone remember that Police programme when they had an Escort Cosworth (Tuned to over 330hp IIRC) and a Vauxhall Astra (Mk2) with a Red Top engine (Also tuned IIRC)

One thing that lets the S60/V70 down is its very poor steering lock.

I remember seeing somewhere once that in the 90's thames valley had a special vehicle crime unit running an escos and a senator. Escos had raised suspension and full protection underneath and reinforced parts so they could stay with twocers when they went over kerbs. Had a load of grpA bits and the engine had some work but dont know what it was putting out. Dont quote me on the details it was a long while ago!

Also years ago the plod had a mk4 '3i dropped with full tints in the st ives area in cambs.

all of the police fast responce omega's have the lsd fitted!

also scotlands just had a load of new vectras SRi's all fitted out with VXR suspension brakes engine etc! so that ain a std model is it....

alot of the vaux fast response cars are from the vauxhall sepcial devison and are reinforced and also raised sightly but with slightly stiffer suspension to enable curb hopping.

The police are told that it i not done, as an ex of mine is plod and at the time she was doing her trianing they wre told it was myths but i had documented proof of the lsd and also the new vectra's so she shut up! also they tried to tell her that you could smell a car being run or red derv... again a load of crap... the only thing that smells as such is veg oil.

Effectively what the scottish vectras are is a VXR with the cheaper SRI trimmings, so yes its all standard stuff, just a slight mismatch of which model vectras its stnadard on, no tuning of them involved though as far as im aware.

Like every1 has said above, theres some that are modified and others that aren't, round here there was an S-Max with tinted windows that drove around with its fog lights on all the time, was annoying as foooook. The also used to be a fiesta Si with a 2.0 in and a escos..... which blew up spectacularly whilst chasing another one.

But, as they were traffic cars they were loaded with a bootful of kit, and the engine mods were to pretty much put the performance back to standard.
