Default number plate auctions

someone said that cos 5y went for over 6k plus vat, what do you think about dvla auctioning off number plates (for huge amounts of profit) that are begging to be altered, thus making them illegal ?
two strikes and they can claim them back again, maybe to be top sellers at the next auction ?
it dont seem right to me, how can you capitalise on something that is against the law when your the actual government thats selling the stuff ?

surely they are aiding and abetting you by selling you the plate in first place ?
if you say no then would give good money for COS 5Y. they know that you want to change the 5 into an S and thats why they put it to auction, otherwise its a useless number plate, cheers nomad ps they also charge vat on top so they get that as well as the auction price, talking about getting your cake and eating it

COS5Y went for £4300 hammer price but the total inc VAT (@17.5%), Buyers premium (@7.5%) then VAT on the buyers premium and an £80 assignment fee making a grand total of £5511.44.
The plate AR53NAL went for £36k hammer price at the same auction.

at lambchop
i agree but mines making naff all against what the gov is charging (well not exactly charging but auctioning ) for their high plates,
radman it runs into millions not thousands,
singh number plate fetched a record fee,
cam ? that plate would not fetch nowhere near if it was spelt and spaced correctly (bearing in mind that you only get 2 chances when pulled by the fuzz) if you have access to the auction please tell what the singh plate went for, i did know but was in shock,

nomad,
You can search all previous auction prices from the site, here is the link for day 1 of the last sale (COS5Y, AR53NAL and a couple of 51NGH numbers).
http://www.dvla-som.co.uk/home/en/Auction/p/live

There were a load of guys in Turbans there and me and my mate felt a bit uncomfotable as nearly every car in the car park had a cherised reg and then number on my mates car was L*** BNP! LOL

Yeah the hypocrisy of it and to top it all 3.7% of the monies raised go towards the recover of misrepresented reg numbers according to the DVLA stiff we collared and then he told us how his boss had bought 8NAL for his new girlfriend...hmm wonder where the number plate goes on that one? hehe

totally agree . 8nal probably summs up his girlfriends sexual preferences,if you cant feel it in the big hole then it might feel big in the small hole

The reserve was something like £1200 and they got no takers. The woman who bought BAR81E was about 55 and looked like a transvestite Barbara Cartland.

that is so funny
wait til she gets pulled and has it taken off her, she can complain to Ken

did the crystal plate have a reserve ? i might start a big fuss in the papers, this is sooo not right (especially if you have been pulled and given a £30 spot fine like me )

The only thing I gleened was that all 2 number/2 digit regs (CB27, 43GH etc) are reserved at £2900 unless they are really special (71TS was reserved at £12k) apart from that even the DVLA guy I collared couldn't explain how thew reserve was calculated

maybe they just included a few normal plates off crashed cars in the hope of punters getting into a buying frenzy and ending up with crap (a sort of government ebay really ),

Yep, it winds me up that I can buy plates that end in 4 EAN or 6 EAN dirt cheap, yet for some reason ones with 5 EAN on the end sell for over a grand
