Default 60 mpg

i drove up to norfolk from berkshire on friday evening, a distance of 143 miles, and averaged over 60 mpg how good is that?

it's a standard 08 Civic i-CTDi with glass roof, had a load of luggage on board including 2 sets of bike clothes and helmets etc. well impressed with that i did really make an attempt at getting good economy by keeping acceleration gentle and top speed no higher than 75 mph, but it's still good for a 5 seat car with a 2.2 litre engine

cold air will have helped But well done.

Have to beat my brother's diesel VW Touran which allegedly managed 70+ mpg on a long run...

Now do one of your remaps and drive it there again, see if you really do get better economy, lol

no it hasn't. although this one seems much better than the previous one (we change every couple of months as the missus works for them), so honda may have changed the map.

i was wondering if Stu can compare the maps if i send him them and see if there are any differences?

Use to get 70MPG from my 998cc mini which was a 1969 car only mods were 12G295 cyclinder head, diff carb/spring, 4 speed as well with a 2.9 diff, sticking to 60mph.

yes but i would rather crash in the civic with all of it's crash structure and airbags, and there is less chance of it happening with ABS and VSA. i don't remember shitty old minis coming with dual zone climate control and an mp3 stereo either

Comparing the two is ludicrous! I had civic for a while and loved it. However, the way I sat the steering wheel got right in the way of the speedometer.

I can always get 57-59 out of my mondeo estate 130 tdci, fully loaded on decent runs. Usually between Brum and Guildford or Brum and Gravesend, i do try, but i thuink theres a definate style to getting good mpg from your diesel

The mini is more nimble though,so less likely to have a crash in the first place

The only problem with an old BL cars is that you stopped at the petrol staions for oil not petrol
70mpg for the petrol and 65mpg for the oil

The other issue of course was the speedos and milometers over read massively, so you think you are getting 70mph @ 60mph and you are actaully getting 60mpg @ 50mph

Its the weight of all this environmentally stuff like catalytic convertors thats a big issue
And the weight of all the safety stuff like airbags and impact bars which we need cause we need to be protected from heavy cars full of safety gear

i will ask Stu if he can have a look at them.

but basically you should just buy one and get a remap and you should be able to achieve figures at least as good as that anyway. Evolution Chips (Stu's company, not mine in case I am accused of advertising) say that an improvement up to 20% may be possible, but that may differ depending on what manufacturers map you are improving on.

as below, that's just a function of the weight of today's vehicles. not just the safety equipment (although that is probably the majority of the weight increase), but also the improved specification, features and NVH.

perhaps one way of looking at it is not that economy has not improved, but that it has not worsened for the same performance and increased comfort and safety.

and that only gets worse as the mothers on the school run start using Hummers as they need the biggest vehicle to keep their kids safe
