does seem crazy the amount people spend on a basic rebuild with some of these companies when your local engineering shop will do it for far less.
Fair enough if its a 600bhp with specialist knowledge required, but on a 400 or so motor, as Tabetha says, its a piece of cake as its all standard bottom end parts!

Unfortunately the parts are becoming increasingly hard to get hold of AND expensive. Just price up a rebuild yourself using genuine Cosworth parts and you will see how "cheap" even a basic engine rebuild is in parts alone. It's shocking for a Cosworth. You can obviously skimp and use cheap / second hand parts to keep the cost down, but an engine builder is unlikely to want to go down this route, especially when a certain degree of warranty is given.

Obviously if you are mechanically apt, then paying for a basic rebuild is not worth doing (and you can only blame one person if it goes wrong ), and below 350bhp, I agree that the standard engine is more than capable of being put back together as it was. However, to achieve a GENUINE 400bhp requires headwork and cams (which means pistons machining etc) and then there is the mapping. Personally, I would rather have some warranty and come-back than try and go it alone, but that is because I don't like getting grease under my nails .

I think it a little unfair to criticise costs of tuners (unless it is impossible to for them to justify the hours put in to the build), as they have to earn a living and I'm sure you wouldn't do your own work for nothing . Obviously it is nice to do a "deal" and feel you have been looked after, but I bet you'd soon get pissed off with your employer if he asked if you could do the same job for X amount less than he was currently paying you .

I find it odd that some have the good rep they have, when they put out some shit, like everyone else they get things wrong from time to time, but a lot of people don't want to upset the "trend" by giving thier own experiences when bad, as they are scared to buck the popular opinion.

I understand the reasons for the prices, Im just amazed people pay them on a basic rebuild,

Ah, evidently you agree to an extent at least, I did specifically refer to the bottom end build though and all the non standard items you are referring to arent part of that.

I wasnt critisising the cost of tuners, I was just questioning why people go to an expensive tuner rather than their local engineering shop for a basic rebuild.
On the contrary though, if its a 600bhp motor you want, then realistically established tuners like Reyland or MAD or SCS or MSD or NMS etc make a lot of sense then as the amount of research and development involved make it far beyond what a local engineering firm would do.
