Default ANyone have an E39 M5, what avg. MPG do you get?

Looking at buying a new car at the end of the year, it's looking like its going to be the latest shape 530d sport but I'd really also like the old style M5 as they can be had for around the same price or cheaper, but also there's the added aspect of running costs to consider. I know STU @ msd has/had one, does anyone else?
Just looking for some real figures, I've read a few articles and they seem to differ somewhat in this area. Thanks, any help appreciated.

My average round town is 21-22 but on a mway trip to see my parents I can avg 28-29.

My fuel comp is spot on.

Sometimes if I am lickin it round town it drops, as you would expect and then sees around 18 avg.

Like they say, you cant have everything.

Impossible to say. Depends what your doing!

Holds about 14 gallons i think, so;

14 x 22 = 308 miles round town

14 x 29 = 406 miles on Autobahn cruising at 80

I'm seeing the same mpg figures as Dan & Stu.

You won't regret buying one.........In fact you'll be addicted and just want to go out and drive the thing as often as you can. Performance is about as good as you'll get on a production high performance salon, and they embarras quite a few so called super cars......Porsche and some of the Ferrari's. They're so refined that the acceleration and top speed is very decieving. Reliability and Build Quality are 1st class, and the Vanos Problems are exagerated (1 in 10 cars has had a problem, which isn't good, but isn't as bad as the hype that surrounds the vanos system, and most cars have had them sorted under warranty).

Basically one of the best high performance four door cars on the market, and about the same acceleration times as a good stage 3 cossie........but top speed way better. (Limited to 155mph, but with the limiter removed 186mph is quoted by BMW.

I havent actually had one single cossie out drag me on a motorway yet, and ive raced some "Alleged" 500bhp ones back from some meets.
(German PF meets of course, race was on autobahns)

They are pretty damn serious once rolling. Shocks me at times just how fast she is.

You really need to try the M5 too mate. Considering its essentially the same chassis, the M5 handling revisions make it such a different beast to push hard.

Interestingly not a single one ive mapped, thats why they cant catch me. Define sorts them out though? I Bet you cant get them out of your mirror, and if you can, they are likely not really trying. Probably too busy refining their dual zone climate control or they are backing off trying to avoid all the oil your YB is spitting at their freshly polished paintwork.

That said, theres a lot of them with only 300bhp out there too, i drove loads, poxy vanos cam sensor faults are extremely common, which is daft, as the damn sensors only Ł30.

Sounds fun mate.
Shame none of them ever actually raced you then. I thought you meant you actually had a full on 70 - limiter in 5th gear race with no backing off and pissing about. Your average M5 owner is unlikely to change out of 6th either as it does 20mph - 186 in that gear. They are Sooooo much faster if you use all the ratios. If you ever get chatting to an owner whos willing to drive it Pete, get a proper race set up on a sensible road (Autobahn again), i think yours would probably win, but by FAR less than i get the feeling you expect.

ROG : Just take an M5 for a drive before you make a final decision on which to get.

Acceleration and Top Speed is so decieving in the M5 as it's so refined. When I had the cossie at stage 3, I know I could leave the slip road on the M27 and as I went under the first bridge I'd be doing 110mph.......In the M5 I'm doing 125mph. And my stage 3 was a good one ......(332bhp on two rolling roads). They're totally different cars though, and the Cosworth is "Raw Power" and great fun. The M5 is refined and long legged, with the power to match. Having done lots of track days in the Cossie when it was at stage 3, I'd put a months salary on it that the M5 would be faster on the same circuit (Goodwood) and on circuits that had longer straights and the opportunity of higher speeds, then the M5 would take advantage of that. I honestlly believe you need a Stage 3 + Cossie to get on par with the M5. I know the M5 weights about 450kg more, but remember it puts out 500nm of torque from around 2500rpm, and that's where it makes the difference.

Also remember the M5 will keep on doing it.. again, and again, and again, and again, and you will NEVER feel the need to turn the radio down and silence your passengers with a defeaning "Sshhhhsssh!", whilst asking "What the fook was that noise?!"*

Nor will you ever find yourself pulling over to the hard shoulder amidst a cloud of smoke or steam, or complaining that you have lost boost, or only lost cos you were "Running low boost"!.

* Go on, deny you have done it.. i dare you!

I can honestly say that my Cossie never once let me down......on the road, or on the track......but I spent thousands making sure this wouldn't happen. (Huge Intercoolers, Radiators, Oil Coolers, Goodrich Hoses everywhere, and the engine built professionally by You Know Who). But the average Stage 3 (Chip + Injectors + T34, without the right anciallaries wouldn't be able to run at full chat long enough to keep the M5 at bay).

As for the Phsssssssssst, Phsssssssssst, Yep I had that, which was great for a while, but annoying after a while.

I actually am amazed at the beat 500bhp alledged cosworths. The M5 weighs in at 1825kg with 400bhp not a good power to weight in real terms a 350bhp 2wd cosworth has better power to weight so to beat 500bhp ones they must have not been trying as you cant alter science.

This is what makes a fast car Edmund not just power to weight.

This is the all important bit, 400 nm at 2500!!!

Ever heard of gearing? and Torque?
I drive more Cosworths and M series BMW's than your average person, and ive not only driven both hard & mapped both to their limits, ive also owned both and taken both to the Nurburgring too.

I do have some idea what im talking about...
Dan, you ever raced any Cosworths in yours? We all know your a Cosworth lover through and through, aving featured in nearly all the Brunters articles anyones ever read. (dan is usually the one looking a goon, jumping around or burning up tyres. ROFLOL)

ROFLOL)
I dont wish to arque as i love the M5 a great car,but your coming onto a Ford site and saying it will beat this and that,a 400/400 cosworth will win hands down especially if 2wd in a straight line drag.It has the same bhp more torque and will pull 180mph with a long enuff piece of road like the M5 needs but the cosworth is atleast by my reckoning half a ton lighter in 2wd form,so to me even a well sorted stage 3 wont be far behind.I understand you map and run cosworths but i cant help feeling "M5" blinkers.

Quick Reply: ANyone have an E39 M5, what avg. MPG do you get?
