I dont wish to arque as i love the M5 a great car,but your coming onto a Ford site and saying it will beat this and that,a 400/400 cosworth will win hands down especially if 2wd in a straight line drag.It has the same bhp more torque and will pull 180mph with a long enuff piece of road like the M5 needs but the cosworth is atleast by my reckoning half a ton lighter in 2wd form,so to me even a well sorted stage 3 wont be far behind.I understand you map and run cosworths but i cant help feeling "M5" blinkers.

Sounds fun mate.
Shame none of them ever actually raced you then. I thought you meant you actually had a full on 70 - limiter in 5th gear race with no backing off and pissing about. Your average M5 owner is unlikely to change out of 6th either as it does 20mph - 186 in that gear. They are Sooooo much faster if you use all the ratios. If you ever get chatting to an owner whos willing to drive it Pete, get a proper race set up on a sensible road (Autobahn again), i think yours would probably win, but by FAR less than i get the feeling you expect.

What about Diva's Sapphire on the way to the Ring?

Your right, we could have had a little roll on to see but it would have meant Nicole having to go in someone elses car as i wont drive very hard with her in the car pregnant. Admittedly it crossed my mind a few times... "Mind jumping in with Sticky for 20mins dear?"

400nm at 2500 rpm? When do cossies start seeing boost? I would've thought it would be somewhere not too far off that anyway and full boost just a little higher up. 400nm just converted to 295 pound feet which cannot be peak torque! Peak torque should be around 5-6k I would've thought once the VANOS 2nd stage kicks in.

i think you should break the car because i almost certainly would have the engine off you along with interior if its mint?
shouldnt be hard to punt the rest and make your money
in fact i'd have the engine as soon as you can have it out of the car if you want!

Well I am consdering it TBH, but i still dunno if i'd regret selling it, and I can't really justify having 2 performance cars, still haven't given up on the idea of a new style 5 seies though, like a 530i M sport, but not the NEW M5 obviously, I haven't got THAT much cash, chance would be a fine thing. So how much you want to pay for the engine, don't say 1p eithr you coont! I just duno how much I'd make off it, i was just thinking about selling it for about 6k or as near as i could get, can't really be bothered with it now.

its not all about BHP! Torque is what will get you moving and accelerating!
Also, the Sapphire RS Cosworth does have a higher drag coefficient of 0.330 compared to that of a M5 - 0.310. Granted theres not much in it, but enough.
An M5 has peak torque of 500nm (369lbft). Ive never seen a stage 3 cossie with that - infact most 500bhp cossies only get in the mid 400's!!
Perhaps Stu doesnt need to remove his M5 blinkers, but infact you need to remove your Cosworth blinkers

Stu isnt just coming onto a Ford site - he used to pretty much own it

I understand your point but surely half a ton lighter also comes into play for the 2wd!

pointless having a car as light as a feather with all of its power etc very far up the rev range with sod all at the bottom, which is part of what Stu is getting at!
Very true ForeigneRS LOL

bike engined lotus 7-a-likes seem to be quick enough. just use the gearbox - it's a torque multiplier

You would look a bit of a cock if you had to rev your Nice sedate looking M5 to 18000rpm to pull away after dropping your 8yr old daughter at school chaps. Dont use silly arguments to win points as its getting stupid.
Having to use the gearbox is fine for a car you want to drive fast as it adds to the experience of fast driving. The rest of us will use Torque and enjoy the peace and quiet of being able to make rapid progress without looking and sounding like cocks on the highstreet.

Yet more proof that you can't have everything in one car...
Fast / Reliable / Cheap - Pick any two you like lol!

good point stu's making there, its sometimes quite annoying having to rev the M3 to make progress, would much rather just have a big wave or torque do it for me

Do yourself a favour and some how, get your self a drive in an M5, then come back with constructive opinions based on experience rather then speculation.
This speculation lark is just making you look very foolish, especially arguing with people have owned both 400 + bhp cosworths and E39's.
Regards

Dan,
I agree with him .
A well sorted 2wd 350bhp/380lb ft Cossie will SPANK an M5 on the road or track. However, it won't last as long, won't drive as nice (4 cylinder -v- V8 - no contest) or won't be as cheap to run (providing nothing goes wrong with the M5 like it invariably will with the Cossie ).
You should stop comparing a well looked after M5 (as most tend to be) to a shed of a Cossie being run on a shoe-string (as most tend to be ) .

I go by power to weight, aerodynamics, torque figures and as said by mike rainbird you'd get "spanked" by a well sorted stage 3 cossie, let alone a 500bhp one!

I can assure you that is not the case from fact and experience.
I have personally raced a a handfull of cosworths in the last year in my M5 and NO I wasnt spanked...lol. I have nothing to prove by making out the M5 is something it isnt.
I can promise you that you will need well over 400 bhp to Spank an E39.
A mere set of greens, T34 and 30 psi is no match I am sorry to say.
Am off to the gym now happy arguing.

E39 M5 over the quarter: 13.75 @ 105mph
My Stg III (a GOOD one): 12.892 @ 111mph
That says everything I need to know and proves the power to weight discussion.
