if he had come into Mclaren and not placed in any races or fallen off at every 5th corner then yes that would be true

But in his first year using the same car he outperformed a double world champion - the hype was well worth it , the talent certainly there , the rating , well he is clearly one of the worlds future greats in F1 , and the pay goes hand in hand with that

as soon as that stream of information dried up, there was a marked downturn in his "abilities" to get round the track

put him into a super aguri or force india car to find out what he would have ended up positionwise last year and then come and make the "he's the best driver out there" comments

i'm not doubting that he is fantasticly talented, because he obviously is, but he is lacking in the one thing that makes other drivers great, and that's the talent to make a shit car look good

look at all those drivers who were in with a shout at winning the title when they were with ferarri and maclaren from previous years and see how far they have fallen when put into an "also rans there to make up the numbers" team, rubens and coulthard as examples
