what is a " stitch" when running ect
whats the reason WHY you get a pain in your gut when you run ect for too long
reason i ask is i cant seem to run longer than 12mins on a running machine due to getting a stitch,,,,,, its not food either as ive tried that so just wondering what the actual pain IS if that makes sence
cheers, ps YES i am bored

I thought a stitch was when you body takes energy away from gut to help you run, and makes the gut stop digesting. Then it complains (hurts) because everything backs up.

During exercise, our blood moves away from the diaphragm to the limbs.
The diaphragm is the muscle that separates the stomach and abdomen from the heart and lungs.
It's one of the main muscles involved in breathing. Most scientists believe the pain is caused by a reduction in blood supply to the diaphragm, causing it to cramp.
or
The stitch is caused by fluids which the body finds hard to digest. This causes the gut to "tug" on the ligaments connecting it to the diaphragm.

I was taught at school that it was lactic acid buildup...caused by your body burning fat for energy when your muscles can't get enough oxygen through your lungs
Work through it if you can & when your fitter they should go away...or get less.

It is a strange one mate as i have done a bit of boxing training, by a bit i mean i went 4 or 5 time really and i never got it and it was fairly hard.
I play football 3 times a week for 2 hours a time and i sometimes get a stich, i ask my self what i`ve done differently from previous games when i didnt get one but im fucked if i can work it out.
Sometimes there not to bad just a bit niggley but others can be proper sore, id like to no also the reason and if theres any good methods of reducing them

As Diamonds says, its diaphram related. Its not muscle pain but ligament and the constant jarring whilst running sometimes brings it on. General fitness and the bodys ability to process whatever diet your on can push it back a bit but everyone, even olympic athletes can get it.

Well from what I can remember, there are several kinds of stitches.
1/ stitches around the clavicle or under the ribs
These are believed to be caused by blood flow disruption. Organs full of blood (liver, spleen) get slighly larger and disturb the diaphragm (which is used in the breathing mechanism). Or the diaphragm itself is sollicited too much during a cardio exercise, when breathing is increased. To stop them, slow down and breath deeply. Press on the liver (right side under the ribs) and breath out while bending over on your right side. If its on the left (spleen) then do the same on the left side!
2/ the ones in the gut/abdomen
These are usually caused by gases in dilated intestines. During exercise, the blood is redirected where it is needed, and secondary functions are slowed. The digestive track not being considered "vital", it can be "paralysed" for a while until strenuous activity is stopped.
Drink fresh water, plenty of it but in small gulps.
3/ the ones in the stomach
These are usually linked to digestion problems. They are felt under the sternum and above the belly button. Simply means the stomach hasn't quite finish digesting food. Should always leave about 3 hours between end of a meal and exercise.
Hope this helps and is still accurate as its been a long time!!
