Default How much does it cost to build a big power Cos Engines????

I know its a case of how fast can you afford to go but...

Just wondered really how much would it cost Jo public to go to a tuning company and have a 600-650bhp engine to be build from scratch ?? Just the engine forget tranmission etc would I get change from 30k ?? obviously I would guess labour would vary on overhaeds etc but how would the components and labour be spilt ?

And how much for something like the Blue Jenspeed\Godfrey engine which has F1 turbo and Steel bottom end ?? I guess that would be even more 50k

or am i way out

Thanks

Well, price it up for a 600odd bhp engine these days you need (controversially) apart from the usual:

low comp pistons (maybe std. comp would do?)
very well ported head
Metal headgasket
Rainbum inlet
Std ECU or Secs
GT30 turbo
Reyland external wastegate conversion
4x1000cc injectors

then the other ancilliaries such as breather, intercooler etc etc

And someone to bolt it all together very strong!

Porkies engine cost 10k I beleive for a safe 600bhp!

Depends what bits you already have, but Ł11-16k depending on how high you wanted it to rev and how many standard Cosworth items you wanted to use.

To get 600-650bhp, you need a GT35 NOT a GT30 .

i reckon , if you used a tuner to source the parts and do the machining , you gotta be looking at 15 k+ but then you also gotta uprate everything else on the car aswell so it soon starts getting outa controll .

we wanted 450 460 brake so replaced everything aswell as engine work , and spent 16 grand . (that included new running gear and brake set up suspension etc etc ) it all adds up

Mike, is it correct to say that a GT30 is a modern day T4 equivelent - i.e. an up to 548 BHP turbo??

Doug,
Depends what GT30, as they come with a variety of compressor / exhaust wheel combinations. A normal T4 turbo moves around 44lb of air, the GT30 on Guido's engine moves 53lb of air and could have been pushed to around 580bhp @ 32psi...

Kev,
You could get 650bhp and an 8500-9000 rev ceiling for under Ł20k.

Afraid not.. Martin nor me don't actuallly know what it ended up costing. BUT it wasn't as cheap as he initially thought as there are so many bits and bobs that I already had. Things like a new Pectel loom, Aeromotive fuel pressure reg, air injectors, etc etc etc

I think Ł50K includes the development work he had to put into it as well. After spending that and probably more himself, he's not going to offer it to you for Ł15K is he

Andy, I recall Karl saying that he wasn't prepared to build another engine like his without adding on "development" costs. THerefore it would be more than the sum of the parts and labour build.

lol yeah no probs just wouldnt be surprised if -no one- asked him to well aware they would be paying Ł35,000 more than they could get it for from anyone else lol

Kev no tuner war, I thought Paul had misheard, obviously not, he heard correct that the price was totally overpriced but now we have the reason why too

paul dont all the other tuners have development costs too

not like mark or stu read a book and followed instructions

im not a Karl basher, dont get me wrong as ya know im not

just think 30 grand tax for development is a bit ott

but then maybe he dont want everyone to have the same spec engine as him hence the price

i wanna know whatb th rudd racing cossie spec engine is and what that costs, fook me that can drift

ok 1 off bits, but if other tuners can do it for 20k are the one off bits needed ( but then karls aint the smae spec as other tuners ect i supose)

still 50k for a engine

give me 50 grand and ill biuld ya a engine with a guarantee not to blow up

again not a dig at karl as i respect him, just think id take my 50 grand to the estate agents

[quote="b19bal"]paul dont all the other tuners have development costs too

quote]

Of course they do. I didn't say Karl would charge you Ł50k The quote was that it cost Karl Ł50K to build/develop. It comes down to how much they need to make back to breakeven/make a profit, which is obviously different for each tuner.

It's also dependant on the other sort of work they do, such as servicing etc. If all you do is build engines then you would probably have a premium because you need to profit from building engines. Whereas a garage selling parts, servicing etc they have a variety of selling fronts. Its called risk management.

From my experience with Karl, I would say he in a unique position. I won't say anymore as it would be pure speculation and I would hate to say anything that jeopordised our customer-tuner relationship

so a 400bhp is around 5-6k and a 600bhp is around 20-50k

keep the 400 and nos the fooker.

Personally I would not spend 20k on an engine, but its horses for courses.

25k got me 600+brake/500+ ft-lb & included Engine, new Nitrous system, Hydraulic & Clutch. Rear beam/Jag Diff loads of new ancillaries also modded brakes uprated shafts etc . Dyno, full testing & all development work carried out at Marks expense. Only Mark knows how much more was spent on my engine in development costs a fair bit i guess.
I know he specified 3 different cam combinations for my car & mine has the best for my build & Ranj & others following who require more Power will have the benifit of the work & changes that were developed on mine.
Rod
ps. My only complaint about Mark is he is quite conservative only running at 2.2bar on the Dyno & then declared Spec was met, which was true. Since then ive twisted his arm & have 2.5bar on the road, around 640 i guess.
