Default clutch problems (vw golf)

Just changed the Clutch on my 1986 8v Gti...

The clutch went in fine and the gear box is back on fine as well

BUT

As you press the pedal down you get to a certain point (about 3" off the floor) it makes a horrid grating noise!!!

The clutch actually works as you can drive the car and it makes no noise and changes gear fine so long as you don't press the clutch too far down!!

So...

Have I got the wrong clutch?
Installed it wrong?
Does the pedal move to far as the interior is totally stripped!?

Thanks

Alex

i recon the little disk at the end of the clutch rod is on its way out ...did you notice any wear in the middle were the clutch rod pushes onto as they are prone for pushing a hole through the disk.........

unless you put it in backwards some how so instead of sitting inside the little resess it is stitting on the other side ...as it will then be like a little raised dome....

Just my 2p worth

The disk is new - and it can only go one way.

It really can only go together one way round... there is no room to get the flywheel over the clutch if its wrong.

Then it also works - which kinda points me to somthing else

<= me!

Thanks for the ideas chaps!

Release bearing in end of box is on its way or did you torque the clutch up right cause they can flex and rub against cover

torque is ok - I used a good torque wrench.

Not sure about the realse bearing, but wouldnt that be noisy all the time it was in use not just when the pedal is in a certain position?

a bit above half way - its manual cable adjustment that is set as per the manual...

The interior being removed MIGHT be problem here - the sound deadening and carpets go under the pedal - now theres none there!

Or it could be I bropught the wrong clutch LOL

when you removed the old one, it looked like that had been a problem before and that is why the springs were worn. if the clutch disengages properly before the noise, just put a stopper under the pedal - job done

It was!!

Without the interior there is too much pedal movement, so the book figures for adjusting the free play are wrong!

All sorted now - thanks for the help guys!

Have you adjusted the clutch cable to suit the new clutch, the way you explain it it sounds like you pressed the fork on to the clutch, but pedal is still travelling and forcing the thrust bearing further into the clutch plate then it needs to be.?????
