Default Briggs & Stratton Engine Help????

Hi i have a husquavana rider 13

And it konked out on me mid cut!

Ive cleanen and checked the plug, and there is a strong spark.

fuel is getting to where it should

all the saftey cut outs for seat and blades are working

oil level is spot on, (it cuts the engine if its to low)

battery it holding about 12.2V, and starter it working fine.

im at a lost end here, as i just cant work out why its not firing. its been the 1st time in 2 weeks that it hasnt been raining and as u can imagine it desperatly needs a cut.

anyone familar with the engines? its a 12.5 hp briggs and stratton 2001 model. id really apreciate some help.

if its a briggs engine ther will be a small black wire on the back of the engine, diconnect this and try it, if it works then one of the safety switches is faulty, try removing the plug and turning the engine over for about 15-20 seconds then putting it back and re trying?? if not id try changing the plug even if you clean it some show a fault within weeks!! an RJ19LM or B2LM plug is suitable,

Check the air filter, if this is covered in oil / carbon, your head gasket has gone. Just had to replace mine - exact same engine.

dont joke, i work for a company called GDC, we built a ride on we were going to race. 22hp as standard, skimmed head, lightened flywheel, racing exhaust, removed the governer, was stripped of most of it weight, was quite nippy when it was finished, all painted up in black and silver McLaren Mercedes F1 colours!!

i worked 9yrs in a mower place...fucking things

try making sure all the microswitches are connected ie the grassbox on if it has one, maybe one under the seat. if there not pushed down then it wont work either.

also how long has the fuel been sitting in there? and was it fresh fuel from pump to jerry can? or was it fuel thats sat in the jerry can for weeks/months?

its a bio chip, so no box to worry about. imagine a compost heap with 2 acres of cut grass each week sod that

machine is great, for me as the chassis articulates, not all flat land.
these things are about Ł4000k new, so i really cant afford a new one.

fuel is fresh, as said its used every week. gets through nearly a 5ltr jerry can each week so its not in there long enough to cause an issue!

i tried the black wire to cancel out the saftey circuit.

after leaving it for an hour it fired for about 3seconds?

but not wont fire again. i have a new plug so will try this now.

as for head gasket, yeh i suppose it could be. i did notice a small amount of oil/fuel on back axle which has come from engine?

how much was your gasket?

try the plug first, does it pop or bang when you turn it over?? on the engine there will be a model type and code number stamped into the casing, if youve got them i can find out the part number and price for the gasket for ya

this machine is quick, think it does about 15mph. and does dounuts on its "own circle".

also its fun as you can get pissed up on a sunday afternoon and go for it. its takes about 2 hours, and i always try to shave of a few mins. got it down to 1 hour 47 before now! and that is going some.

you have to do handbrake turns, and ive even had it on 2 wheels before. tho the center articulated chassis folded up on my, it was carnage. my mates found it very funny but it bloddy hurt

if the oil has been changed regular and always on the level pretty much rule out scored bore...say that though it wants to start when it cooled down could mean its a problem there :S

if you got spark its not the electronic unit.

tbh i doubt the headgasket has gone on it.

the crank (shaft from engine out) isnt bent is it?

have you tried starting it with out the filter on? try that.

if not one of the first things i used to do is clean the carb out with an airline or a hard blow just make sure you keep your finer over the middle hole as some carbs lose the little gasket with a hard blow....and you wont find it...trust me them carbs are so small a little bit of shit in it and they piss you around

Mike, do you run it with some sort of collector to get the cut grass up and if so is like a normal mover where you have to empty it every 60ft?

We got a large garden too and I rather spend my time elsewhere than behind an old mover.

i rebuild the carb a month or two back, as it was hunting like mad, looked like a learned driver kangarrooing along the grass. but to be honest im 99.9% certain its not a fuel issue, thers pleany coming through and it showed no signs of fuel starvation!

Anyway put the new plug in with no luck. so i had a closer look around the head gasket.

if you look closley to the left of the exhaust manifold is very oily?

took of the subframe to get to the head bolts, not 3 of them covered in crap

took of head, its definatly been blowing around the exhaust area.

so question is is this the cause? its defiantly blown as you can see half the block surface is dirty.
would this really just cause it to cut out and then not start at all?

anyway engine is 12.5 briggs

model 286707
type 1206-E1
code 0205 12ZE

gna get a quote on gasket from "earnest does" but thay aint normally cheap.

will my head need skiming

put ya fingers in the bore is it scored at all?

pull it over make the piston come back even with the block and wiggle it see if you get much play?

pull it over and see if the valves are sticking?

just scrap of gently the sticky gasket and get a new one. about Ł8-Ł12 from that then it could be a factor yes. i never used to get many gaskets go tbh. and ive serviced thousand of them fuckers when was it serviced last i used to get customers that self serviced them and the head bolts werent dont up tight and that gives the problem too.

oil on 3 of them bolts and in your exhaust could be due to the ride-on hase been tipped slightly on its side cleaning underneath or something or over filled but more the 1st bit. dont worry will just burn off (you will get smoke just let it burn and make sure level is ok)

is the filter oily? if yes wash out with fairly liquid or clean with petrol and blow with air line.

and no dont worry about skimming

i was joking on the skimming btw

well just shot of to braintree (good excuse to take the cossie for a blast, some sexy blonde in a bmw 3.0l msport baited me aswell, she had a roling start on the roundabout so didnt put her to shame untill 4th gear. next roundabout a mile away i got a nice wave of appreciation, she would have got it aswell)

anyway got a head gasket for Ł6.16+VAT

will fit tommrow.

have left head in degreaser bath tonight.

piston is tight (i reckon) as that blonde bird in the BM and the bore is silky smooth like her arse. valves open/close as they should.

so really all it can be is the gasket? anyway will report back tommrow

it has regular oil changes.
