You might get an older style, early focus for that mate. I reckon a 1.6 in that would be good, and not bad on fuel either.

A mate of mines got a dturbo, not a bad car to be honest looks good when modded nicely.
And you can turn the boost up a bit, with a decat too releases a bit of power and is quite cheap too. Before he did that i would be level with him in my 106 quiksilver which is a 1.4, now he's tuned it a little, it's much harder to keep up and is still really good on fuel

Skoda not usually owned by the 'boys' so often unthrashed with pretty reasonable build quality and performance.

205 1.4 GT - if you can find a decent one (unlikely).
Cheap as chips, probably get one for less than half your budget. They go really well for what they are, good on fuel - and because only 1.4 you get cheap tax and insurance too!
If you dont care about tax you cant beat a 306 TurboWeasel, even the older XUD engined (non HDI) cars can shift.

fiesta 1.25 are very good cars. superb little engine that is surprisingly nippy if driven hard, and very economical if not. highly recommended. you don't want to be buying french shit (although the fiesta is built in spain, which is not much better, but at least the engineering behind it is good).
