i started the thread bout snap on tools and all that. well just found out my dads company deals with tool suppliers and they do everything britool facom etc. all i gotta do is make a list of everything i need and the suppliers will give me the options available for each set with the different companys / tool manufacturers. will get 20% off list price cos its through my dads company. Now i just got to decide what i wanna get. im only on a saturday job at mo with bit of work now and again in school holidays but will be startin working next year weekly around 3 days of my college course. so i decided to start to build up my tool collection over the summer. was thinking on just getting a proper ratchet set metric and old school sockets of various length extension bars etc.. speed brace aswell. some spanners ring, normal open headed and ratchet spanners aswell, maybe jubilee clip tools and some saftey equipment such as goggles ear defenders etc. what would you do about storage at this point? just by a small top box or get a carryiable tool box?

firstly i would get a

metric ratchet set - ratchet, extension bars, sockets & some deep sockets etc. (blu-point do a really good set!)
alan keys/torx bits - either in socket form or L type
metric straight spanners - with ring one end and open the other
small set of screwdrivers - cross & flat
rubber/nylon/plastic mallet - pref nylon/plastic
Torque wrench - will need one working on engines!

with the possibility to get
drop ring spanners
ratchet spanners
bent spanners
breaker bar

dont think there is much you cant do on a car with this basic set

goggles and safety equipment cost not alot for good stuff, so its not too much bother

as for tool boxes, i would have something like this to begin with

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/pr...lling-workshop

its easy to move about, and the box comes off if you need to go to the scrappers or something!

this is what i would be getting by the end of the summer for a personaly tool set! but a good socket/ratchet set will go a long way!!

is this for home or work? and what kinda work you gonna be doing???

don't get that toolbox shown, i had one a while ago, it wont last long in a working environment, its not very practical either the drawers stick etc, so everything ends up getting flung in the top box.

erm yh well its going to be for work in a engine builders / race nd rally prep. i doubt i will do much engine building at first as it will be once a week so more just general in car fitting and engine stripping down. so i will have a bit of time to save for torque wrenches and stuff.

i bought a toolbox and some tools recently, i shopped around for a bit looking mostly for a good value box and roll cab, i ended up getting this package from sealey

if you go for something from sealey, avoid the American pro stuff, its just not as good as the superline pro range. its a lot better quality.

in the drawers of my stack of tool boxes i have the following, in no particular oder but just to give you an idea:

bit's and bobs that need care, prescion measureing stuff like micrometers and vernier calipers etc
loose torx bits and drill bits
spanners in set, dinky ones, ratchet ones, normal ones
cutting stuff like jigsaw blades and files and knifes and the like
screwdrivers
stud extractors and torx bit sets
1/4 drive sockets and ratchets and extensions
3/8th drive stuff
loose spanners
electrical stuff such as fuses, relays, crimpers, strippers, cable ties
1/2" drive stuff
pliers and cutters and the like
various other random hand tools like mole grips and spring compressors and oil filter removers and pry bars etc
full halfords tool kit
3/4" drive stuff
air tools or various sorts
and there is other stuff that sits around the garage as well

so that gives you an idea about how much space you'll eventually require to put all your various tools away in

yh obviously i know what im going to need in future through everyone elses tool boxes at work but i just cant afford to buy a massive roll cab yet so i was thinking buying just the sall things i will use the most and a top box and when i get more regular working and a proper full time job i will buy roll cab and mor bulky and less frequently used tools.

but a smaller box for the moment
the sort that you can put on top of a roller box
and one that will take a smaller box on top
that way you don't have to keep spending money on tool boxes

My ex missus dad works for snap on (area manager), was having a chat with him the other day, he was telling me that alot of his dealers get good cond snap on cabinets and boxes as trade ins when they upgrade for the next box size up. Then they sometimes sell them on for cheap to other garages/personal use. I'm hopefully getting one soon.
