Default Symptoms of a cooked CPU (pc?)

Last few months my PC has started to slow right down, and won't run and games with decent graphics, been getting quite a few temp warnings due to a broken fan that I have not sorted, would it cause issues like this? Still got well over half of a 300 gig hard drive left, gig of ram etc all working fine, graphics card is updated with new drivers etc...

Had a few viruses a while back off msn , but sorted them ok, but its really suffering in the 3d graphics now and wont run anything with 3d ...

is a P4 3.6gig chipset....

are there any tests I can carry out to narrow it down?

could well be an overheating cpu... fix the fan!
probably worth cleaning out the inside if it's full of dust as well.

Dude if your CPU was fooked it wouldn't boot! - though the fan needs sorting ASAP. Usually it'd blue screen if the CPU was playing up.

Needs a reformat thats all!

....put the mouse down and step away from the keyboard!

you shouldnt be allowed to use PC's

your CPU will be dead within a couple of uses if you dont fix the fan.

Some processors will 'downclock' their speed if the temperature gets too high (so save their own arses).. if your cooler is playing up then this could be whats causing your slow-down.... although things like spyware and viri are a more typical cause (although the temperature warnings are pretty obvious!)

not necessarily.
i've had machines before that people have overclocked leading to thermal issues and causing poor performance, general errors, and seemingly random shutdowns. they don't always just blue screen all the time... it may be the cpu getting hot once the machine has booted that causes the problem, especially if it's being put under load.
either way i'd still fix the fan before reinstalling or anything like that as it'll be there for a reason.

if the rad fan on your car wasn't working and the car was acting up would you rebuild the engine? (poor analogy i know!)
