Default Galaxy diesel engines

anyone know much about them?

thinking of getting one for a while, need something to run some stuff about & still have room for the kids! plus i want a diesel

most of the one's i have seen are 115ps but a couple of people have told me that the 110ps was a much better engine........
can anyone shed any light on it or are the 115's ok.

cheers

i think they use the vw lumps as well as the ford ones which may be why there are a few different versions

the ford lumps will be the basic 115 and 130 ones, where as the vw ones go up in increments of 20 starting with 90, 110, 130, 150 as per their car engines

we had an old 1.9 n reg kept the old thing for 5 years, bought it cheap as chips on 300,000 miles, it only ever failed one mot on front balljoints, solt it with 370,000 miles and it still ran and drove fine, for the last year it ran on straight veggie oil from the bottle,

sold it for 400 quid i bet it will last another year or two yet lol

They all vw engine's don't know how new / old your looking for but the really early ones had electric probs on the window central locking side of things, anything 98 onward should be fine, We hav also had a coupe of turbo probs on the newer ones seem's to be when the cars sat for a while go back to it and it doesn't have any power,

All "old" galaxy diesels had vw lumps. Personally I'd avoid TDIs as I don't like the sound which is extremely rough even for a diesel. A bit like a 1.8 Ford Endura DE engine without oil! :P

Not the most reliable engine either (like all modern diesels). Make sure cambelt and tensioners have been changed. Also theres always the danger that someone has already tried "fancy fuels" on it (bio-diesel, vegetable oil etc.)...

110 bhp one might be considered the better one as it's still common rail injection (1 injection pump feeding 4 injectors through a "common rail").

The 115 bhp has 4 injection modules, basically every injector has its own pump. Very posh solution but no real advantages. Engine sound is even rougher then on the older TDIs and maintenance is a lot more complicated. For instance the cambelt change will cost a lot more. Also, in the meantime VW have gone back to common rail on their newer engines.

i beleive they have only gone to common rail due to the pd system is not effiecent enough to reach stage 5 emissions. the pd system is very very good.

the old shape galaxy, upto about 2000 came with 90 and 110 bhp engine, both using a bosch rotory distributer type fuel pump, not common rail. the later ones 2000-2006 use vw diesel engines again in both 115 and 130 forms which use vw's pump duse [pd] system using individual unit injectors.

in my experience the later 2000-2006 shape ones are much more reliable, as said eariler ones always seem to have electrical problems.

Get a 130BHP Alhambra SE TDi, Better spec and less money than the VW / Ford, and with a good remap a healthy 180BHP that still returns 30+ MPG around town. Front suspension top mounts are prone to going and make sure the aircon works. We're on our 3rd hastle free year with ours.

Cheers, Paul T.
