Default your opinions on the audi s3 please (good/bad points)

maybe at the end of this season it will be time for me to part with my cossie managed xr2 as i cant really see me being able to take it any further, its all ready 1 of the quickest fwd fords around at the mo and has proved its worth & has pretty much the best parts already etc etc

so i have been looking at some nice sporty everyday cars and came across the audi s3,

ive been looking around the 2002 models @ about 7k but maye i could get later depending on when and if the xr2 was to go.

but.....i know nothing about these cars???are they reliable? what breaks? are they expensive to maintain etc etc, what options and different models/power were available, im having a search on google now but thought id ask you guys for opinions too.

all info would be appreciated as i like to know all good/bad points on any car i would think of buying in the future

thaks

Hey mate, I work at an Audi dealership in NZ now and to answer your questions:

are they reliable? - Yes we only see cars for servicing, check the clutch for slipping but other than that they are top notch.
what breaks? - As above
are they expensive to maintain etc etc, - Not terrible, cambelt at 80,000 but I would go at 60k as I have seen some wear on them at 80,000. It is a bit of a job due to space in bay so dealer may charge a fair bit for the job. Haldex oil change every 20k miles and oil and filter every 40k miles(I would make sur ethat's been done).
what options and different models/power were available, - Cars until 2001 had 210bhp and after had 225bhp and a slightly revised look(though I have seen some cars with revised look and still 210bhp so have a look). Honestly I think you will find standard power a bit lacking they are a heavy car but nothing a remap from the likes of Revo won't sort out.

Good luck and they are GREAT daily drivers!!!

Over priced and shit slow imho!

Parts are fucking dear and servicing can be pricey aswell!

Other than that I personally do not like them and never had the urge to buy one

im not after an audi for the speed at all guys, compared to the xr2 it will take quite a car to outdo that,

im just after a tidy looking, sporty daily car i can just jump in, drive and enjoy with a bit of comfort and a stereo for entertainment rather than a pair of bosch 044 pumps buzzing behind me
i can cure my track addiction with a sub 1k car that im not bothered about just to keep me in that side of things when i feel the urge.

i just think for the money the s3 seems to be a great all round day to day car so wanted peoples opinions who have acually had or drove 1, i may not like them when i drive 1

Was disapointed with how slow a standard S3 was, after he had it chipped went way better and was much better on fuel.

its a really good car, the build quality is top notch and personally I found them reasonably good performers.
Ive never wanted to like a car so much, its simply so comfortable, so competent and does everything so well that its a little bland imho

You just grew up!

Nothing wrong with that mate. Good cars the Audis. Classy inside and pretty bombproof.

Personally I think you would enjoy a Scooby more.... time for an Audi when you REALLY grow up! also Having seen Gatecrashers Scooby at the Ring I was amazed at what you get for your money!

how much was bens scooby then lee? And what year is it? Thing that puts me off them is the fact they may be expensive to maintain and i dmay get tempted to uprate bits

I had one new in 2000.. Absolutely loved it, couldn't really fault it at all.. Sure, it's not the fastest thing on the road (0-50 in 4.9s, 0-60 in 6.1 - poxy 6 speeder ).. They do understeer, but then what production car doesn't? Haldex is a bit of a joke, but you can do some mega launches with these! Side-stepping at 6k on a production car can be so much fun

ask him mate. Keep it fairly standard and it will be be bombproof mate!

you will get a newer and better car than the Audi if you ask me for less money!

MUCH MUCH more fun as well....

I had Seans S3 for a while. It was nice. Fast enough, comfy, classy but sooo ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Good car for a daily driver. Mine had faults with the xenon headlights not self adjusting and the fuel gauge not working, audi quoted me Ł700 to sort these problems out. apart from that, well specced, and reasonable to drive, if a little dull. Good car if you have a toy in the garage though.

spend less on a Leon Cupra R, which is very similar but handles better and is a little quicker too...i just so happen to be selling one too

seriously though, i love S3's, but for the premium over a Leon all you get is nicer seats tbh.....the Leon comes with plenty of equipment as standard and you'll save around Ł2k for similar cars.

Nice s3 for you, not my car but one that id just seen advertised on edition 38....

I purchased the vehicle last November and find myself wanting to invest in a more focused track/weekend car, unfortunately I am unable to run the Audi day to day as I have done for the last 6 months. As a true car enthusiast the vehicle has been maintained regardless of cost and I can honestly say the pictures do not do it justice, you need to view the car in person to appreciate the subtle modifications I have carried out and the condition in which i present the car. You will not be disappointed, do not confuse this Audi S3 with other examples!

Ebony Black paintwork in outstanding condition, recent front bumper renovation by VAG Specialist bodyshop, facelift model with xenon headlights, full satallite navigation with built-in screen positioned in centre of dash, rare Bose stereo with disc changer OR Ipod interface (buyer to choose) climate control, immaculate Recaro interior in rare blue alcantara and black leather, completely unmarked and fully electric/heated. Nokia Blue Tooth handsfree device also fitted to the vehicle. This car has every option available at the time of manufacture except for rear parking sensors.

MOT due March 2009 and a remaining 2 months road tax.

I have recent HPI certificate for the vehicle which is all clear.

The car has been tastefully modified and has remained faultlessly reliable. Upgrades include:

REVO engine management upgrade(270bhp/260lbft torque)

Milltek cat back stainless steel exhaust system
(6 months old)

Forge Motorsport, black silicon boost hoses and Pirtek heavy duty clamps.

Uprated Forge Motorsport recirculating dump valve.

8" x 19" Audi RS6 alloy wheels

Toyo T1 235/35/19 tyres, 2 months old.

-25mm Eibach lowering springs.

Also supplied with the car (not fitted) KW adjustable rose jointed rear suspension arms (cost Ł270 and never fitted to vehicle)

Full service history mixture of Audi Dealership, Jabbasport & VAGtech with ALL supporting documentation.

Work recently completed at VAGtech:

Full service including cambelt & tensioners
New Exhaust manifold
Hybrid turbocharger

The car is ready for sale as it currently stands, cash or bank transfer (prior to collection) accepted only.

PLEASE NO CANVASSERS OR TEST PILOTS

Private registration on the vehicle is not included in the sale, will be removed accordingly.

I am based in Northants.

Any further questions or information about the vehicle please telephone or email. 07904 439669 - tom.clarke@meguiars.co.uk

Problems - Coilpacks

Known to corrode around roof C piller joints!

Main dealer servicing can be costly.

Standard brakes prone to fade after extended 'spirited driving'. What car doesnt though? Need the Porsche upgrade.

As others have said - understeer more than you would think - Haldex can be fiddled with though!

Good cars but essentially not that quick. My mate has had one for a few years, I remember when he 1st took me out in it and he had his ass handed to him by a Corrolla 190 T Sport! He prompted had it remapped as I told him I would do the same to him in my remapped and fettled FRST at the time! lol
