The brake pedal is already locking the rear wheels, but doing so isnt losing him any speed, what the fuck would anyone want to pull the handbrake for in that situation?

I was thinking the same thing, I didn't want to say it incase I was somehow wrong. I doubt going to first would of done much in such a short space of time.

going into first would have either taken the engine to upwards of 20,000 rpm, causing it to lock all 4 wheels and lose his steering totally, or would have simply snapped the clutch or input shaft to the box or similar, either way, it wouldnt have helped, he was already coming down the gears trying to use the engine to stop anyway im sure (havent watched video yet so correct me if im wrong)

Think its definately neutral unfortunately as I would have tried to come down without locking, but as said before so so easy to say watching a vid!

Id imagine that if he is doing 110mph, 3rd gear would be the best to pick to scrub off a few mph, but its not going to do a great deal when you are so close to a corner at such speed.

The speed differential between some of the cars racing is a bit silly and scary it seems though

you panic and you want to slow the car the FUCK down so you do it by any means necessary IMO

FUCK engines and gear boxes they can all be replaced quite easily compared to the whole car.

But it wouldnt slow the car down, it would just lock the wheels and remove your ability to steer it.

The video could have been much better if the front facing camera was lowered, good job I know that track as it isn't easy watching it with the rear view mirror bang in the way.

Would never happen in a racing situation. You simply wouldn't have the time to make sure you were able to slot it into first, and even if you did, you'd probably blow the box and/or engine losing the ability to maneouvre the vehicle.

Hardly recommended at speed when you're trying to throw the car sideways to scrub off the speed.

In fact, watching that video, you can see why he did what he did.

I dare say, that speed, head on into the barrier/wall, and the injuries would have been horrific, if not fatal.

Massive accident - very lucky no-one was hurt.

I would still hope I wouldnt put it in neutral and try to go down the box. I think turning off track was wise given the corner and impact angle, and making it even tougher was the marshals post that is in the infield, another thing to avoid if he could have steered enough as its looks like one just off to the right! Its a shame he collected the other car but it is racing.

quote from MLR
Blair - I had the Brembo 8 pot fronts off the green SWB fitted for this race, I was using 1 race old R600+ fluid.

"Thanks to everyone else for the kind words! Rest assured myself and Gary have already spoken and I will be "helping him out" with his car.

Cheers

Si"

So his car was passed by scrutineering, he took someone out doing the best thing and still is going to help the guy. Top stuff but huge shame we wont see more vids, as porkie said it was very entertaining. I like where the other guy outbrakes himself and "open up" the chicane, faster lap times after that lol

not really, no. have you never locked tyres?

the skidding effectively builds up a layer between the tyre and the road/track surface that is slippery and increases the slowing down distance - hence why abs was invented

4 locked tyres would slow it down quicker than no braking at all - but the fact that you have no sterring ability means that it's not necessarily the best idea

To be honest, in the brief seconds he had, after going through the mental process of realizing the brakes were not there, he did pretty well IMHO, fuck all you can do except try and hit somthing as soft as possible .. Thats Motorsport.

That's exactly what I thought. I think hitting the orange one was a massive stroke of luck as it must have halved his tyre impact speed...

I think he did VERY well tbh given the situation, I hope my posts reflect that, I only commented on putting it in neutral as being odd.
