hi mate, yes in the race programs it says
car 97,mitsi evo 9 RS
engine norris designs
driver simon norris.
here is what he has posted happened.................

The cause of the crash was total brake failure on the approach to Tower, I applied the brakes three times but all that happened was the rears locked and unlocked scrubbing no speed. Becuase of this I turned the car in very very early (before the corner) to try and get the car sideways so I could scrub off some speed. It stopped an even more serious possible outcome......ie death for me!

Sadly this meant HEAVY contact with Gary (Orange car) and then the tyre wall. There was a full investigation today (after the event) and I have been praised by the clerk of the course for the way I dealt with a very nasty situation. The official cause was "mechanical failure".

Sadly this 800mile old Evo 9 RS is a total loss, needs a reshell in the minimum. I may just break the car and take some time out until the green car is fixed though. Kind of makes you realise how dangerous motorsport can be.

Cheers all

Si

p.s. The brakes had boiled fluid which had no previous signs until I applied them on the approach to this corner.

He said same thing about the brakes on the day, I was stood right next to him when he was talking about it, shame as prior to that there was a great battle going on between the two evo's

I wonder why his brakes boiled, they looked up to the job, also whenever ive had brakes boil you can feel them getting spongy for a while before they go totally, so I wonder why he didnt pull off when that started happening if it did so here as well, its just not something you expect to happen to a well specced racecar with no warning.

Gotta feel pretty gutted for the other fella, totally blameless but now has no car, thats racing I guess, but still pretty devestating, he obviously knows simon as there were norrisdesigns.com stickers on his car.

Looks a sore one. Hes not had much luck at combe.

Chip- Norris builds the engine for the guy he hit. He builds 4 of the other evos engines that race in that series as well

Both cars were going very well so fair play to him on the engines.

Obviously needs to talk to a company who are an expert with trackday build and prep though to find out how to sort the brakes, Owen Developments would be a good bunch of lads to approach im sure, they seem to do a good job, Mark Harrison's car was going brillitantly till it also got stuffed from behind, not a good day for evo's!

Twice at Combe that's happened now with Simon driving Evo's and smashed an innocent third party up!

Simon's looked a wicked Evo 9, great shame to lose it so quickly

I know what you mean about the 2 cars, you cant help but wonder if he is trying to run before he can walk, if I was just starting out as a learner racing driver I would be in a 100bhp single make series or something to start with, but I guess if you have the money to go straight in at this level then you do so, but it does seem to compound the chance of something go horrifically wrong rather than just wrong, when a mistake is made either with the car preperation (like this time) or the driving (like last time)

Doesn't look alot wrong with his driving to me!

http://www.norrisdesigns.com/videos/new-9.wmv

wicked video!

The speed differential between some of the cars racing is a bit silly and scary it seems though

Does he have any idea why he was getting brake fade when other cars werent, what was wrong with his to make it do so? (I realise he had slightly more power, but I was watching and he wasnt carrying any significant more speed up the straights etc)

The Clerk of the Course commended Simon's driving as he overted a multiple pile up. Unlucky for Gary Prebble as his Evo got mashed but the most important thing is nobody was seriously hurt.

There have been a few folk posting that Simon was "all over the track" coming out of Quarry and snaking down Farm but I reckon they were watching a different race to me!
Gutted for Simon
A couple of my mates were racing in their Caterhams (Nick Pancisi in the Super Grads and my business partner Alwynn Morris in the Mega Grads).
It was a great day out bar that incident.

WOW, have a look from his point of view!
i saw the crash happen, but lookin at it in the car, he must of been panicking a LOT!

i think he did rather well TBH!!!! 100+ suddenly realising you got no brakes,
with lots of other people stopping in front of you... split second desicion..

they do properly let go all of a sudden

panic probably dont describe that moment!

Shit the bed!

Fair play he did well tho and was quick to take the best corrective measures open to him. It must take some balls to make that split second decision to go sideways at that speed!

I think he was very lucky to hit that other car, I would not of fancied his chances had he hit the tyre wall at that speed!

Cool vid!

Shame, I didn't see any of you guys, spoke to Doug briefly.. I spent most of the day in the paddock or pit lane, the yellow TT is the one we run -

Spookily lost the front brakes on there for the last 4 laps, that looks like a vapour problem too, there's loads of travel on the front master cylinder, we have datalogs showing huge pressure in the rear line and very little in the front on the occasions when they didnt work - in between times they seemed ok though, needs a bit of investigation.
Real shame for Gary though, he's suffered huge damage and probably missing a race or two to fix it for no fault of his own, but thats racing unfortunately

Loads more pics here for anyone interested: http://www.turnpikeracing.co.uk/2008...MJH/index.html

well after watching the video I will comment that he has quite a few issues with his driving..nothing that a day of proffessional instruction couldn't solve tho.

firstly on the first video he is turning in far to early and hence his exit speed is poor just watch the red car catch him mid corner before he gets back on the power.
He has a habit of driving one handed particulaly under breaking, the guy in the red car got past him due to him not having proper control of the slide because he only has one hand on the wheel,(he did eventually catch it quite well tho!) he also seems to be a unsure of when to change down on a few occasions so rests his hand on the gearstick, this allows the car to "squerm" about under braking unsettling the car in the process.
as for the crash yes it does appear to be a distinct lack of brakes and he did what most of us would have done, I did the very same thing last year when I lost a tyre through craner at donnington, I went for the infield to give me as much space as possible.
I'm not knocking the guy as he has the balls to get out there and do it where as most of us can only dream of been in a position to race competitively.
hope he gets the car fixed and gets back out there as the car looks bloody good fun!

steve

Wouldnt knock his driving as its all good fun, but why put it in to neutral(looks like that in the vid) when you lose the brakes, slightly odd in a 4wd that could have offered a lot more stopping power off the drivetrain. Easy to say watching a vid though and much harder in practise, espcially as it probably has some horrid multiplate clutch in it so stopping it from locking may also be quite hard? Was all a bit fast as well for such manouvers, shame for other guy as well but that is racing.
