Is this the noise that was there when I went out in it that you thought was the water pipe?

If so, Id check the turbo isnt scoring the housing, as it sounded a bit like that to me.

yes chip, that noise, i'll check the turbo shortly, but seems odd as the turbo was aboslutely mint when it was removed, no play in the shaft whatsoever.

chip, just taken the hose off, and as suspected its perfect, no scoring, no marks, and no play.

When you say it sounds like a supercharger on boost, is the air filter hose fitted & sitting correctly on the turbo mate.

yes mate, clamp on perfect, and makes exactly 20psi, the same boost it used to make before the engine strip.

doesnt sound like air blow by at all, sounds like a a high pitched note, as i say similar to what a supercharger sounds like.

Did the old screw driver test yesterday on the tensioner, and i can deffo hear something there on tick over, but unsure what should sound right and if you should here any sort of resonating niose.

Try it with the cone filter fitted again. Mine makes a high pitched squeal when on boost ever since fitted Escos airbox

Not sure what it could be Ryan, just throwing ideas around here...

Is the noise any different when the engine is warm or cold ?

High probablility of an Air leak from your description. Normally only really apparent above around 10psi and gets higher pitched as you load her up. Go and check all your tight boost hose clamps are actually tight enough to sustain the sort of air pressures your tyres are holding up a ton of metal with.

ok mate cheers stu, yeah could well be an air leak, be great if i had one of those tester thing's.

Could well be an airleak i guess, unfortunately i have never been in a car with a leak to know what it would sound like, will go check all my hoses and clamps, and also inlet manifold.

Can you not record the sound on phone then upload it ?

I've had a whinning noise turned out to be a cam bearing(ball race) due to a tight cam belt ! make sure u can turn it trou 90 degrees half way down

Do what i do and turn the tunes up LOL

Also on my cortina i had a bosch cam belt which had a funny tooth shape like a pair of boobs!! that caused a nasty noise too

Paul

costina, thats actually what i've thought it was all along, but sooo many people have said they hardly ever go wrong, the cambelt was a bit tight but not overly, its now been slackened, and still the same.

could possilby record it yes.

Will try the hoses first in a moment.

That's a fair point Was thinking that engine temp increases tightness of the cam belt ever so slightly which could point to a belt-tightness/tensioner issue.

Hissing noise often comes from inlet manifold gasket.
Might be worth spraying brake cleaner around all the air hoses / clamps / gaskets which car is running high idle to see if that shows anything obvious.

can you not remove the actuator from the wastegate, hold the wastegate open and drive it to eliminate the turbo to some extent?

high pitch whine was an air leak, massive thanks to stu for that pointer, FUCK ME it goes alot better now.

Now just need to sort out the whurring noise, which im pretty sure is either cam bearings or tensioner and thats it, job done!

Sounds like the turbo was going supersonic . Good job Stu pointed you in the right direction, as it must have been overspeeding it's poor little tits off and wouldn't have lasted very long if it had been left .

So are you coming now then?

Im quite surprised at that, never heard an airleak quite like that before, but then it did sound like a whistle which is essentially get an air leak under specific circumstances.

Glad it was a cheap fix.

Fair play to Stu for knowing what it was, shows how many of these engines he deals with.

When mine was making the whirring noise it was the cam bearings as the cambelt had been done too tight previously. SCC sorted it in next to no time for me that time, it was quite a cheap job. Obviously get the cambelt changed and the tensioner done at the same time!

the belt and tensioner are 7miles old

but will probably replace the tensioner, im pretty sure its cam bearings.

mike, looking ok, need to look at finances, as will need to sort a few things out on the car before i go, one being a rev counter, bushes, chip.

jase, that would be perfect mate

leak was bottom turbo hose, wasnt that tight, so nipped it up and went like a starship.

Need to check my amal valve is working as i cant seem to get it above 20psi, unless it needs to be jetted and hasnt been. Which will mean another job for the list.

But feck me it goes ok for 20psi.

Ryan,
Yes the AMAL valve will need rejetting if you have the actuator preload set to "half a hole" . Get the car sorted .
