You all kidding?

Not an import, common cars, Mk5 Golf GT.
Run a 1.4 16valve turbo and supercharged engine. 170bhp and lots and lots of torque, run 25psi as standard iirc, i think possibly 2bar+ spike, i cant remember now.

No it doesnt have twin chargers... as in two chargers that are identical because they are from the same egg...

But it has non-identical chargers.... a small supercharger which comes in from 1000rpm and a turbo charger..

So two.. but not twin....

A good friend of mine has one and its a fookin missile for a 1.4 and it still returns him over 40 to the gallon....

Its the future....

Seriosuly cool technology, its actually the same way that im compound charging my car too, supercharger feeding the turbo, but when the turbo needs more a bypass flap opens to allow it to draw air in directly.

Ive not driven one yet though

Yes mate, I'd say they are because you get performance and economy and in this day and age thats got to be important.

Tho it may be the best way for reliability/economy reasons (i dunno), this supercharger first then turbo, with a bypass, isnt a great way from a pure performance point of view, as your missing out on some of the main advantages of the system, albeit while getting lower charge temps at least.

i seem to remember from when i was a VW it has a massive issue of the beeing "jerky" and very obvious when the turbo starts boosting

so much so i belive that was the reason the TFSI engine was dropped and replaced by a 1.4 turbo engine, as used in the mk5 and 8P A3

What advantage are you missing out on?
Do you mean the potential to run HUGE boost?

If so, unless its a very time limited application, like a drag race or a tractor pull, I dont really see that as something that is a great advantage TBH

Also it means that once you are up in the rev range and on boost and the turbo is capable of doing it all on its own, you can remove (at least most of) the parasitic losses of driving the supercharger.

Not the huge boost, wasnt even thinking that.

But people can do it how they like, but from practical testing, I know what id do and why.

Mostly the massive lack of pre-turbo backpressure from the supercharger doing some of the work the whole time, even if its only a small amount of work its doing.
Leads to being able to run a properly stupid amount of ign advance without det it seems compared to a turbo on its own.

The extra parasitic losses are far outweighed by the other advantages.

And that comes from someones practical testing of the various ways, not some theory and talk.

Depends a lot on the turbo selection, if you are seeing massive back pressure it kind of implies you have gone too small on the exhaust housing I would think, especially as you are no longer reliant on the turbo to spool quickly in order to make torque as you have the charger for that.
Interesting comment about "stupid amount of ignition advance" though, what actual numbers did the practical testing show then with and without the charger for the same boost?

Not massive, massive lack of compared to any normal turbo car. Same with the ignition.

Not getting in to numbers, not getting in to any of it, not interested in another 80 page argument, hence why i deleted even the lil bit I originally wrote.

For there to be a massive lack of with the charger, it means there must have been massive back pressure without in the first place in order for it to now be lacking yes?

No one is looking for an argument, if you've personally tried it first hand then Id be interested in the numbers thats all, as this is something im about to do myself, so any info relating to it that can help me get it right first time is of great interest, isnt sharing that sort of technical info exactly what this sort of forum is meant to be about? Im sure it will interest people a lot more than your normal type of posts

So come on, lets have the info about it

What car did you do it on, I didnt even realise you had had a compound charged car TBH mate!

Which turbo and what charger did you use?

What sort of boost were you running and what power did you get?

I've had a look at these myself as I think the small engined turbo/Supercharged engine is the way to go with this goverment hammering us with fuel tax and higher road tax for larger engined cars. This is old technology really as Lancia did this in the eighties with there Group B delta S4 rally car to get power right across the rev range.

A guy in the Northwest used to tarmac rally one of these and it made a sound like a cow Mooing when ever he lifted off the throttle but went very well.
