Simple Question
All things considered, if you were me, you could buy any car on the below spreadsheet, taking into account MPG, Insurance, Initial outlay along with how quick it is, how reliable it is.... what would you go for? And why.
250mile per week of commuting to consider too.
(The cars in blue are the preffered options at the moment)

coldo mate if your just going with the cars in blue, i would go for the focus st or the astra gsi, been to view both cars recently and quite fancy 1 for every day use,
always had a soft spot for the S3 though, a couple of my mates have had them and
they were well pleased with them, nice car for cruising about

Dunno about the GSi, its a good bit cheaper than most of the others but its a Vaux dunno if i'd enjoy it.
S3, yes, 4x4 and turbo appeals to me, and its an audi, quality car

Thats probably my favourite the now, reliable, not bad mpg and they look smashing. Loads of tuning options on the 20v T engine too.
ST is nice, a few mates with them and they are awesome, although horrid on fuel. Working in glasgow too, so 50+ mile round trip could be costly?

Everyone keeps sayin S3 Heart is almost set on a cupra r, but the S3 is mega tempting due to the 4x4 alone.
Going out now, need to read more opinions when i get in!!

Do not buy a focus st if your traveling to glasgow everyday i was doing 200 mile per week (mine was chipped) never the less i wasnt seeing anymore than 220 miles to a full tank of super, ive had evo's cossies, type r's & m3's & the st was the worst of all by a mile.I wasnt driving fast everywhere either in the st , it went very well tho with code red,de cat ect but not worth the fuel bills

3 cars that are not on the list that might be some good to think about?
MK5 Golf TDI (140) and a Clio 172/182
i would like to say the Skoda Faba VRS on that list because you can up the power quite a lot and still get shitloads MPG
but cos it has a shit dash and no climate control, the inside is well GAY but as a + point, they do hold their value pretty well and fuel is great
i would say id pick the DC5 just because i think it looks fucking great. doesnt really need mods, and if it really does that MPG its the bollox for a petrol performance car plus should be reliable, and should also hold its value for resale in the future, cant really fault them. they do also have the cheap effect on the interior, but what jap cars dont
i love the S3, if you buy a standard one and you like modding, youd probs go crazy on it as its turbod, and end up spending alot more than you probably want to
i notice that a standard one doesnt seem to stay very standard for very long with most owners, as its a few years old now and the mods are pretty affordable
on the list, id narrow it down to 3 cars on there taking into consideration what youve mentioned at the start of your post! in this order
1. DC5
2. S3
3. Fabia VRS

I have now got a fabia vrs its remapped seeing average 44-47 mgp goes great , takes a beating every day in life does the miles & only filling it up once a fortnight instead of the focus once a week so a huge saving.Fair enough its a skoda but the s1 is in the garage tucked away

Carlo; Your not the first person to note that the ST is horrible on fuel. How was the typeR you had in terms of mpg etc?
VRS is a shout but i've been driving a 55plate diesel seat ibiza recently and its well boring, but great in terms of build and drive etc. Just think i would get fed up of the VRS after a while.
Indycos; DC5 would be good, i rekon my budget would only stretch to an early/higher mileage one but its deffo up for consideration, they look and sound quality. Assume it would have the usual Honda reliability too.

Ł1700 to insure the fucker, i've drove a couple at work before and they are quality. Ł1700 is a major sting though, as is the convertible bit, dunno, i'd say its out of the running because of insurance though.

how many miles do you do per year? That will have a marked effect on the relative importance of standing costs and running costs.
You need to calculate what each will cost you to run per years taking into account depreciation and running costs, then decide on that basis how much of an increase in cost you can justify for an increase in your enjoyment.

The civic type r was getting around 280-320 miles for Ł40 which was good i thought considering it was never drove easy , compared to the 220 miles in the focus fot Ł50 of super.Civic type r for the cash are great wish i had never sold it for the focus.Fabia is good because its remapped & your not at a fuel station as much as any of above

i forgot to mention the following, 320d/330d/530d sport. which if picked, would obviously lead to a remap
quality german cars with all the goodies for around the 10k mark
but you can tell me to fuck off, cos theyre not on your list, sorry
