My home town - just one General Sir Harry Smith, the Hero of Aliwal, hardly the most famous bloke, but I also found this trawling the net:
Also has major factories for McCains and Hanson (London) brick.
Local city - Geoff Capes, Frank Perkins, Thomas Cook, Nobby the tramp
Local area - Oliver Cromwell, Hereward the Wake, Octavia Hill, Isaac Newton, John Major...
Little known fact that Dam Busters used the sluices at the Dog and Doublet for testing the bomb sight for the bouncing bomb. While secret work was carried on, Guy Gibson lived in a cottage situated where McCains effluent plant is. The squadron of night bombers were known as the Owls - hence the carving of the owl on the ridge of the roof of Nat West bank.

We used to be famous for burning witches.
Then the Bull Stone got blown up.
We had a big cat roaming loose.
The Scottish Liberation Army blew a hydro building up.
The Venture Scouts changed our "Welcome to Crook of Devon" sign by adding "Twinned with thief of Baghdad" - that one made it into Readers Digest!
And we have a famous (!!) folk singer and two TV presenters living in adjoining villages.

All these famous people above and who do I get .....
Rick Astley FFS
Then we have other wonderful greats such as Pete Waterman (hense the link from 1st person ),
Duncan McEnzie ( who apparently is some sort of old footballer )
Colin Welland (Z Cars, Kes) also won an Oscar for Chariots of Fire (Incidentally Kes is one of only about 5 films I have ever seen in my life, thats because we were made to watch it at school because of the local connection )
Fran Cotton - ex England RUFC captain and now something to do with clothing Cotton Traders.
When all the other local resident greats come flooding back into my memory I'll not bother posting
