Fuel injection, mechanical to start with(k-jet etc) then fully electronic.
Carbs cannot hope to compete with fuel injection on combined emissions drivability, though the best ones can be close.
Also not just the injection system, the engines have changed a lot for more efficient designs.
ECU's give far better and finer control of the fuel delivery at all loads speeds, another major step was doing away with vaccum distributors which are next to useless, but all there was at the time.
