Default bolt sizes

How do i identify the size of bolts i require? All bolts sizes i see are like M6. Are these 6mm thread diameter?

so what would this mean?

M6 x 10M

6mm thread, 10mm long?

M6x10 will mean.. thread is 6mm outside diameter by 10mm in length

M18x1.5x20

means 18mm thread diameter, 1.5mm pitch thread, 20mm long.
