Advice needed.....should i buy this Series 1 or not ? All advice appreciated.
Evening all
As some of you may remember, about a year ago, i sold my projectand fully restored Series 1 RS Turbo Custom. Having worked on the car for 18 months, taking it to bare metal underneath and restoring the whole car to original, replacing every single part with brand new original ford items, i sold it for £10,000 as some of you will recall.
Since then i have been in two minds if i did the right thing......i could never EVER have used it on the road, as it would have ruined it right away, but i do regret never getting to use it.
Since then i have been keeping a close eye on the forums, ebay, autotrader, pistonheads etc, and thought many a time about buying another one to clean up and use as a weekend car. I would never go as far as i did last time, i probably wouldnt get the parts, but i would love to restore a project car and have a clean driveable motor.
This in mind, i set about looking for one about a month ago, and have found one which i have stumbled across.....basically, its a 1985 Custom, Sunroof, Elec Windows etc....with 119k and loads of history, original and new log books, 10 owners from new, and pretty much run of the mill..
Problem is, its been sat for 8 years.....not used since it was parked up and the owner died, left in the back garden driveway, and just gone to waste. The car was actually restored, and sprayed 8 years ago, but since then its sat doing nothing in english weather, snow, rain, sun, snow, rain sun etc
I have had a good look over the car, pretty much knowing the basics of what to look for.
Current owner is genuine enough, he didnt know what to do with it, and it sat, didnt have the heart to sell it, but didnt know how to deal with it as hes an older gentleman.
The bodywork is flaking in various places, rust in usual places, scuttle panel, tailgate, but inside the tailgate seems ok, grubby, the doors have some rust at the corner edges etc, and the bodykit aint original, its a fibreglass copy which has been blended into the bodywork and painted to match, looks "ok". The wing lips seem rotten under the kit, had a feel and usual crumbly stuff.....the engine bay is a mess.....spiders webs everywhere, but every single thing is original. Battery tray etc is rotten, and i cant see much for mould and cobwebs.
Rear spoiler has grass growing from the edges lol
Pretty much guessing the shell is in a bad way, so i would need to reshell, or do a LOT of welding and repairing with panels....so thats two options for that...
The interior is original. Original Parcel shelf uncut, original recaros, they look pretty good actually, passenger one is just grubby, drivers one has no rips or tears, but outer bolster is sagged.....not torn though.....rear seat is fine.....and complete...
Carpet is soaking wet on drivers side....guessing water getting in on the scuttle and down....or from somewhere else.....But dash is genuine.....cracked in a few places on drivers side next to hot air vents...
Door Interior Trim Panels are Minted, as are rear interior panels.
Glass is all there and original. Window strips are knackered on both doors....crumbling.
Sunroof looks ok.
Its got original headlights, and VIN plate is in box of receipts as it was never put back on after partial resto 8 years ago. But matches Log book etc.
Stainless exhaust was put on 8 years ago brand new, but i cant see under it properly, tyres are flat, but 4 original wheels on there.
Car is chipped as receipt is there to prove it in box of history, loads of receipts from previous owners
Basically i am interested in buying it, but have no idea what to offer, the guy says he wont let it go for "stupid money low or high" as its not costong him anything sat there, but he knows its worth SOMETHING in parts alone.
So....i am after advice....bearing in mind the shell is probably a write off.....as are most panels....what would you offer for it ?
I plan on taking it home, stripping out engine, interior etc, and if its NOT going to be worth reshelling it or resto, then i will sell it all for spares / parts....
Can someone give me some advice on what they would offer please ? I have about £1000 off the bat offer in mind, and dont think thats too high or low.....but what can i salvage thats the question.....and is it worth my time ?
Obviously i would have to get it onto a trailer and taken home to Scotland, but this isnt a problem as i have access to a trailer. Its defo not going to start / drive...
Many thanks, any help and advice much appreciated.....

i wouldnt offer a grand, offer £750 then see what his reactions are; if he knows its worth more in parts why has it been sat for so long; explain your hoping to restore it and bring it back to former glory but you aint paying over the odds.....some people think there cars are worth a fortune, in reality there not and it will probably sit there for another few years

Hi mate
Well the guy is about 65 years old i would say, and doesnt have the ability to strip it, or anyone to do it for him....
He does seem "pretty" clued up though, as he says he occasionally looks them up on the internet to see what they sell for....

I don't know your old car, but it sounds mint, and must have been to sell for £10k!
You must have a talent for, and probably enjoy doing, the work, so why not?
If you don't go mad on buying all new bits for it, stick to a budget of sorts, you may even be able to do it for a profit (albeit not much when you consider the hours labour), but I guess you'll enjoy it anyway.
I'd say go for it pal. Offer £750 and see what he says - realistically he's never going to resto it, and even if he does look up what MOT'd, taxed, running cars sell for this bears no resemblance to what the car in its current state is worth. Sell him the benefits of selling the car to you

he may look them up on the net, but he carnt compare a price to what he has in his garden to ones on the net lol
id offer £500 ti be honest
it has a fake kit for start, the shell is rotten, its been stood that long the engine iwll need a full rebuild
so its going to cost a lot of money to get rite,, but there could be a chance you couldnt break it for that amount and lose out
it all depends if you want the hassle or look for a half decent one to start off with i think

Hi, I don't know if you want to spend as much as this but I think this Series One looks like a good car:
