HELP!!!
right im getting quite desperate now, even considering selling up!
took the car to msd on monday for full set up and diagnostics as its running flat, should be around 200bhp+ but feels about 20bhp!!
they said the cam had signs of wear and this was my problem. i've just returned from holiday from 2 weeks away, car has been sat on the drive unused in this time. it now runs even worse so dont see how it can be the cam?? its not been used to degrade it anymore than it was.
the car started to run odd after swapping my gearbox to a fiesta rs turbo box about 6 months ago and has got worse and worse ever since, all i can think is i have an air leak somewhere, any ideas on how i can solve this?

I have seen in person an RST making about 110 bhp on a dyno when it should be 180 because the cam was sooo worn.
CVH cams are known for wearing and once they break though the hardened outer shell they wear rapidly.
MSD might be right, it could be the cam.

it just seems odd that from it being a bit rough before i went to it now being awful but hasn't been used. the cam is less than 12 months old and has never really had a hammering. if i had to guess my bhp id say about 70 its pathetic at the mo.
it feels like the car has massive lag, but even when it does boost it still feels half hearted. im thinkin either airleak of fuel pump/filter clogged? makes sense if its been sat for 2 weeks?

CVH cams can wear in a few hundard miles mate.
Have you tried double checking all the pipes and wiring conectors you may have disturbed when you changed the gear box, spaying WD40 over hose ends can show an air leak as it will make the idle revs change.

if the cam#'s not been run in when it's new then it tends to get worn a lot quicker than you would expect
and seeing as the cam is opening the valves etc your lack of pwoer would be fairly easly explained by the fact that the cams fucked and not doing what it needs to do

The Cam is probably the root cause of the problem like MSD say, but having left the car for a further 2 weeks untouched then something else could have failed or at least a lack of use maybe contributing to your poor running perhaps?

Take the lifters out & see if there is any ware on the underside, if the lifters are concaved then the cam will probably be scrap. I've seen plenty of RST's that have wrecked the cam in under 1000 miles!

why not listen to what MSD told you? why are you looking for another problem when they told you its due to the cam? If it had been a mate that had told you its the cam, fairplay i would probably root around myself just to be sure, but i dont think MSD would tell you that if it wasnt true. why waste time trying to fix something else? why not address the cam issue?
But like everyone is saying MSD know there stuff fella.
change the cam first mate, but change the lifters at the same time as if you use the old lifters the new cam will wear very quick and end up like the old one
change your fuel filter aswell asits poberbly the original one still
check your breather pipes under the metering unit above the box as these tend to have holes or split as they sometimes rest on the clutch arm of the box and the arm wears through them
check all vac pipes
as mentioned dw40 or brake cleaner when engine is running and if the engine picks up you know you have an air leak
other than that i carnt think of anything else near the gearbox unless you have disturbed the dizzy connection which always snap

Hi Ben,
I didnt do your car personally, Will did, but i remember him showing me your cam and followers and they are knackered pal.
The car has very high HC's, runs on 3 at idle with Hc's in the 1000s and the compression test resulted in a sweep from 160 - 180 psi which isnt too bad.
The AFR and boost was checked live on the road and then the cam timing checked and the intake system pressure tested. there are no leaks. All pointed to a lack of dynamic compression (No air making it into the engine) so Will whipped out the followers and inspected them and, as expected, found half of them to be very concave and the cam lobes to have worn away very badly.
Its ALL just normal CVH dead camshaft wear. The engines are afflicted with it.
All this info and more was given in detai in the bound work report you recieved with your setup so you can consult that for further info on teh afflicted cylinders as they were inspected and reported individually. Best thing you can do is bin the cam AND followers mate, she will never run properly until you do, even if there are other issues... this is your biggest issue mate, the engine will never run smoothly until its cylinders all make the same power and all get enough air to do their share of 200bhp. Yours dont.

We removed the rocker cover and the followers to assess the condition of the camshaft and followers. we discovered cam followers:
Cylinder Number 2 Exhaust
Cylinder Number 3 Inlet
Cylinder Number 4 Exhaust
Are all showing signs of heavy wear the camshaft itself again is showing signs of wear and we would advise replacement.
Once a replacement camshaft and followers are installed we would strongly advise the boost and fuelling are checked to confirm the vehicle is safe for sustained hard use.
i still have the original cam which was running fine when removed so i could always put that back in i suppose. what sort of power difference would there be between the original and a CVH35 from kent?

1mm worth of wear it HUGE when it comes to cams as if the cams worn by 1mm or the lifter has a 1mm dent in it then the cam is going to have gone through the hardened bit of either which will lead to it just wearing away even more the more you use it
get a cam kit that has the cam and lifters and lube in it
then get someone professional to fit it up for you
at least that way you will know what's been done and they can show you what the old cam was like and how they've run the new cam in

Mate I use to be like you and would try and self diagnose problems with my car and to be honest all I would do is put parts on it that were never needed.. waste of time and money. Someone then told me about Mark at Grove garage in Romford and I have used him when needed and it saved me cash and time and the car was running how it was suppose to.
I have never used Stu at M Developments but his reputation is very very well known and speaks volumes about his ability with these cars..why dont you do yourself a favour and close your bonnet and get your car over to him and let them sort it out....not trying to being nasty or anything but trust me I have learnt from my mistakes.
