.com domain names are held via internic, when they expire they go in to a redemption period i think its 30 days on a .com then after that it goes back on to genral sale.

he might have it on automatic renewal, alot of the reg hosts do that anyway, in which case you will struggle to get it! i think it takes a couple of months after the domain expires before it is released. at least that used to be the case. i got hold of a couple doing it that way.

one of them i got, i emailed the domain registrar and asked them roughly when it would be released, they give me a rough date and i checked daily for a few days before, and then it came available and zap i got the fooker
if you dont succeed set up a similar domain name and a new website and tell all your club members to sign up on the new one. its not passionford.com is it lol

Before you go with any of the said companies, do check out their 'small print.'
If it becomes an issue, try contacting the current registrar and explaining the situation - once it becomes de-registered (not expired) it's a crap shoot
