Default Wheel bearing clunking/grating - can it come off?!?!?

Right, my N/S wheel bearing is clunking and grating a LOT now - it's been making a noise for a few weeks and it's booked into Ford to be sorted, but can't go in till next Monday. Thing is, it's got a bit worse over the last week or so - there's a fair bit of movement in the wheel and you can feel it "click" and turning left especially gets a nasty "knock, knock, knock" from it.

Anyway, my worry is it's dangerous - can the wheel actually come off the vehicle? Can the hub seperate and the wheel, brake disc etc actually physically come away from the rest of the assy? Or will the bearing just collapse and it all lock up?

Don't know alot about bearings and hub assy's

It's a possibility yes.................... a mates wheel bearing failed (after neglecting it for a long time) and the wheel came detached along with the hub and snapped the stub axle

Could seize on also, replaced my front bearings on my merc the other week as they had been making noise and the N/S race had seized onto the stub axle and I had to dremel it off.

I'd keep it off the road if it's as bad as you say

my friends bearing went in his suzuki 4x4, and it locked up the wheel (the front right )while he was on the motorway, he slid into the central reservation...caught the guard rail and ripped away the floorpan on his car, he ended up facing on coming trafic, but thankfully was ok, and relativly unharmed.......mate, get it changed!!!!

It's getting changed, but Ford are shit and can't take it in till Monday

It's not been like it long, couple weeks or so, but it's just making more noise than it was the other day, and there is movement in the wheel

Not happy about it.....

i personally wouldn't drive it. the wheel could come off, it could sieze, and if you're lucky and manage to NOT hit something if any of those things happen, you could also fuck the hub.
