Default Registered keeper age query

Recently heard of some bloke putting his car in his little boys name.
Then when speeding tickets come through, and points defect to registered keeper when driver isn't known, boy can't get them.
I presume this smells of bullshit, or is it a good idea?

i'm sure there is something like, you can't insure a car that isn't insured by the registered keeper already? something like that?

Well, I've had a recent argument on here, but 2 people from different insurance companies have told me I can drive other cars that have no insurance, on my insurance.
The only issue is leaving it on the road unattended.
So insurance would be no issue following this advice, as would be on the drivers insurance.
Don't klnow if there's a minimum age issue?
People seem to own cars with no driving licence, so don't think that is a problem.
Saying that, could have a mrs of 30 or whatever with no licence, and be registered keeper.
Would she get the points if driver couldn't be established??

Edit/ Taxing may be an issue, but someone could insure it to cover when it needs taxing, then cancel policy?

Yeah I guess not.
But if it is a loophole, why don't they close it up, or is crime prevention not done these days?

our lass used her mother's car that was registered to her mother and she had no insurance, so our lass took out insurance and drove her car for 2 years like that.
Surely if it is registered in someone's name who is not of age or have a licence and they get flashed and couldnt prove somebody else was driving, they could be done for driving without insurance or not having a licence

They don't need to close it. If the car is in the son's name and 'they' get a fine, they're a minor so the fine defaults to the child's parent/guardian.

It one of those internet rumors which sounds plausible on the surface, but just isn't real.

ive been told by my insurance the same as callyT
basically im insured on any car even if there not insured, as long as there taxed and mot i can drive them, but

the car is only insured when im in it, if the car was parked up on the side of the road it is not insured as you need to have insurance on the car to be on a public highway they say with no one in it
if the car was parked on private property its fine, but i can still drive the car wether its insured or not

but i dony know how the police look at it lol

As far as I'm aware that's not true, even if you can drive any car, the car has to have some sort of policy on it. Unless it is a trade policy, but I'm not sure how those work. My policy certainly states the car (that's not mine or under the policy) I am driving must be insured.

My policy doesn't, that's the key I believe.
Don't want another argument like one I had with Porkie though
If my insurance company, and Dan at Flux both tell me it's ok, I'll go with that considering my policy makes no mention anywhere of car needing to be insured.

Most fully comp policies allow you to drive "any other car third party only, with the owner's consent" as long as you're older than 21 (or 23 in some cases). Speaking from experience of it some companies also want the car to also be insured in the keeper's name, but some don't mind if it's not.

Indeed, sounded too good to be true.
As I said, just something I heard, and didn't think could work, but couldn't come up with why really lol.
Really you need a mrs that's got a licence, but never drives, be ideal that.

I've got two polices that allow me to drive any car ... according to my insurance company I can drive any car regardless of whether it has its own insurance policy. The only stipulations are that it must have road tax and MOT.

The registered KEEPER and the registered OWNER are two very different things.

with regard to driving other cars on 3rd party from your fully comp insurance, i had a rotter 200sx that i bought for Ł600, and the ins co wanted around Ł1500 to isure it. fuck that, i was insured on the missus clio FC and the policy stated that i could drive other cars on a 3rd party basis.

no mention that it had to be insured by the owner.

i put the sx in a mates name who was a trader so he could tax it, and i used the car for 6 months.

got pulled over 3 times for no insurance, said i was working on the car for said mate, once they checked my details and let me on my way, ther other 2 i got a producer. took in my docs etc and all was ok.

now on my new insurance with a different company it states that the other has to be insured.

so cant do that anymore.

Dunno, didn't check back to find out, can't be doing with it
He contacted my insurance company, and they told him different to what they and Flux told me apparently so...?

You can see how replies in this thread are going though.

ffs it's not rocket science.
A registered keeper is not always the owner.
Why would an owner of the vehicle insure it to not drive it?

As i said above earlyer about our lass she did it for 2 years and 2 of her brother's are also doing the same on 2 seperate cars.

You need insurance to drive the car on the road in your name or be a named driver NOT the owner.

All this about not getting insurance because the car is not insured with the owner is complete and utter shit.
Not even hearsay!

Anyone been told about "LAST MAN STANDING RULES" ?
If a car is uninsured then whoever drove it last, when it DID have insurance on it is the responsibility of that insurer should a claim crop up ten years later.
If no insurance ever can be established, then it goes to MIB, which is the reason I took the MIB to Bury St. Edmunds COUNTY COURT around 4 years ago, and won against them when an uninsured driver wrote off the car I was driving.
A court has discretion to issue points to who THEY beleive was the driver, they are not stupid and have seen all these tricks before, even selling your points to local students is getting harder these days.
A car does not have to have insurance in a keeper or owners name to be able to be used by someone else on thier insurance.
I recently drove and MG(old sort) rusty heap the the MOT place for a friend, on my insurance, and he's a traffic cop.

Very informative thanks for replies chaps, answered my queries nicely.

Tabetha - all these cop shows where car flags up as uninsured, then driver gets a relative to come and drive it home, kind of confirmed also car does not require it's own insurance; but Porkie rang my company, and told me me and my policy, and what they told me, and what Dan at Flux told me, was wrong
