hes employed, read the top post, he does not fill in a tax return so cannot claim for tools, these should be provided by the company.

the tax return will be for other stuff then like savings, investments, or a second job that they do, which would be classed as self employed. If he did this he could claim the tools on his second job just this obviously isn't legal.

Also too add people used to be classed as self employed but work for one company, this was to pay less tax. Our company used to operate like this, 5+ years ago now tho, this has seen been stopped and you need to work for more than one person.

You can either claim a flat rate if one is agreed here;

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32712.htm

or claim tax back on all or part (determined by HMRC) of actual expenses on items used for employment;

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/eimanual/EIM32715.htm

Ring you tax office to get full info, that's the office your employer pays your tax too, not necessarily your local one.

You can also claim back if you have to wash your own work uniform. Amongst other things. Don't know how to do it, all I know is UNISON offers it as a service.

You can either request a self assesment from or download from the HMRC website. As long as you keep receipts etc or proof of expenditure then you can claim ANY incedental costs incurred for employment back. This includes:
Costs of tools necessary and wholly/singly used for the employment. you cant buy a ne socket set for the car and claim for this back.
Costs of washing work clothes supplied by the company.
Costs of washing uniform
Cost of phone calls incurred for business purposes.
Cost of fuel etc used for business purpose. (ie nipping to the tool shop etc)
You dont have to be self employed to do this. If anyone has any queries PT me as I run a business specialising in these sort of tax rebates.
