Right, who on here knows about this stuff?

Let me set a scene....

your in a nice "sound" room, the kit is mic'd fully (individual drum mics leading into a dedicated 16ch drum studio mixer, which in turn is fed into channels 1 + 2 on the mian desk mixer)

your guitars and bass are also fed into this main mixer, which is linked to your amps and PA system - basically a superb rehersal studio.

Now, you can take line outs to a mindisc (or tape/DAT) recorder to record demo's etc in a "live" sense (ie: one take, all instruments at once "live style")

What I am interested in is a PC software programme making your PC a digital multitrack recording studio. Basically feed the end mix from the main desk straight into a PC (via a line in I guess) and record to HDD. So you could record the drum track first, then lay down the rhythm guitars, then the bass, then the lead guitars, then add vocals. Re-mix and tweak (ie adding effects, echo for example, to vocal sections, pulling the guitars higher/lower at sections etc) then review completed track and burn to CD for optimum digital "demo" quality, and be able to save file as MP3 for net uploading.

So thats the scene, what it is I am after - anyone help me with links, leads, blah blah?

does it have to be a PC? cubase is probably ye best bet!

 

Have heard about cubase but don't really know what it is/does....

I guess it don't *have* to be PC based, could use a digital 8 track recoding machine (burn to 100mb zip discs, can be transfered to CD, or just burn directly to CD) but the PC based set up would be superb if it works how I need it to, as it would offer a whole new world of mastering options to tweak a semi-pro souding demo into a real pro top notch recording.... also allows uplink to net for MP3 etc....

 

was thinking of a mac... know someone who all he does is set up sound studio's and hook em up to macs...

Does cubase allow you to "save" it as an Mp3 ??

 

Problem is, I am very good with HARDWARE. I know exactly how to mic up and link drums, guitars etc to mixing desks. I know exactly how to mix them using all the pan, gain, EQ functions etc, and I know how to produce and record using recording hardware such as stright to minidisc (as described above in a "live" situation) Most comes from a backround in live stage sound production, and some self taught, but I know about amping and PA set ups, fold back and closed loop monitoring. I know about aux sends and inputs, mono and stereo mixing using 16>4>2 multi-bus sound desks etc....

what I don't know about tho is SOFTWARE. I just don't get or understand computers lol.... I don't even really get digital multi tracking (from only having a backround in analogue 4 and 8 track machines using good old cassette...)

All very new to me - it's like sigs - I know how to do them the old fashioned, long winded way, but not with funky photoshop software etc....

 

Unfortunatly Cubase is a VERY VERY complicated bit of software!
I know people who have been using it professionally in their studios for years, and still only really know the basics. If you wanted to learn it properly you would definitly need to go on a course or be taught some how.
But once you do know it, it is very powerful too.
