Default Thinking of converting to YB power... what do i need

OK, im thinking up quite a large project here...
ford capri mk3 (now with 2.0 engine, which is a 205 block)
im wanting to convert to the cosworth 2.0 engine, which i assume would mount on the same engine mounts (well maybe with some uprated ones of course)

Just asking what would be needed for example which engine, which gearbox, which diff/propshaft if they need to be changed, would i need new dashboard clocks (bar the boost guage) etc etc
quite detailed answers will be appreciated, so i know what im looking for so i can price up everything and get this beasty started!

also, if i cant buy a donor car what turbo etc is standardish if you know what i mean.

I did this conversion to my Capri about 12 months back now, really quite easy to do if you can use a welder and a grinder First off make a list of what you want and how far you want to take it, i bought a complete big turbo engine with manifolds, turbo, sump, flywheel + clutch, 2wd wiring loom and ECU, T5 gearbox and downpipe. There are still a few bits that you need after, my Capri was a 2.8i special so it already had an lsd, but your back axle might need changing, up to you really, my propshaft fitted to the t5 gearbox so yours should to. You will then need an intercooler and radiator, I got both from Radtec there not cheap but brilliant quality though. You will need to make custom engine mounts, i just used Pinto mounts and "made" them fit to to my X member not hard if you have access to a welder. I centered the whole engine/gearbox around the gearstick hole and this worked out really well for engine position, its nice and low and really far back in the engine bay which leaves plenty of room for the cooling system. Although the Capri engine bay is big you run out of room really fast! You will also have to adjust the gearbox mount to fit. If your running carbs at the moment you will need a fuel pump and will have to run a wire for that. The 2wd wiring is really basic only 6 wires to wire up. I have had a few teething problems with mine, the chip in the ECU i got was a cheap and nasty one (got it running though!) once i had a bit of spare cash i upgraded to a MSD chip on Siemen injectors etc etc from Stu. Its now running a 32psi spike and holds 28, this is more than enough in a car that weighs 1200kg! (probably less now with rust loss ) The biggest concern i have had is its pretty much impossible to run a 3" exhaust under a Capri without it catching and it definatly wont go over the back axle without knocking on something! I have gone down to 2 x 2" pipes I know it works out less than one 3" but there really isn't much choice. I havn't driven it yet with the new exhaust so i don't know how much it will affect it. I have think i have covered the basics of it if you have any other questions that your unsure of just PM me. Sorry about the messy way I wrote this as well, just kind of wrote it down as it came to mind.

quick list up then (people may add but this is an initial list)
starting off with a STANDARDish cosworth engine (to save on funds for the initial conversion)

2wd ENGINE (with all bits to make it run including hoses)
Wiring loom
Custom exhaust
Custom engine mounts*
T5 GEARBOX
Rear LSD diff
Intercooler and radiator
Fuel pump and wiring
dash clocks**

*or am i right in saying the 205 block was used as a cosworth block at one point and uses the same engine mounts as the 205 pinto block?
**do i need to change the dash clocks or can all this be wired into the standard capri ones (speed, rev, fuel, oil press, battery and temparature)

out of interest how well does it run with the cosworth in it?? im guessing its a little tail happy lol?

I'm not 100% on the clocks, I know there are a few different types, i had V6 white bottomed clocks which I was told were the only clocks to work off ECUs, obviously these wont work with a 4 cylinder engine. Fortunatly I had some spare Pinto Capri clocks (should be same as yours) I got bored and tried these and they worked perfect so hopefully your clocks will work ok. Im not the biggest font of knowledge on the cosworths but my 200 block had the same bolt pattern for the pinto mounts, and they were off a 205 pinto block so i think there all the same bolt pattern, good old ford Just realised what you meant, can you get the old cosworth "205" mounts and use them? As far as i know everyone who has fitted this engine to a capri has had to modify the mounts to fit, don't think there is a mount that will just bolt straight on, well the pinto mount will but it will put the gearstick about 8" to far forward and into the center console, I didn't want to have to cut out a new hole for the gear stick and liked the standard position, plus i want the engine as far back for handling reasons. plus with the engine that far forward your removing a lot of room for the radiator and intercooler. a lot of the hose you will need will be custom jobbies, I just bought silicon ones, had them before and never had any trouble with them you might want to think about brakes to, i change my final drive to 3.85 and it flys up to 160mph and onto the limiter without any problem at all. Im using 283 cosworth discs and Mondeo calipers at front and granada discs and calipers on back and it still doesn't stop as fast as i would like it, depends what you want to use it for at the end of the day though. O Yeah I had to relocate the battery to the boot. Can't think of anything else at the moment. Uhh yeah...its very tail happy still controllable though because boost doesn't come in till about 3300 you can take it a bit easy around the twisties then really open it up on the straights, its good fun and I think more controllable going sideways then with the old torquey V6.

you can use standard 1.6/2.0 engine crossmember and standard 1.6/2.0 engine mounts. Gearlever position is fine using these.

make up a gearbox crossmember by modifying with a Sierra CVH gearbox crossmember.

the front section of the prop needs shortening by 25-30mm.

standard 4 cylinder clocks will be fine.

you'll need to mod a clutch cable.

Hi Guys,..

I know this is an old post, but would be very interested in knowing what mods you made to the clutch cable...

Was thinking of using the burton power cable suited to the Mk2 Escort..

Anoyone knwo is 25 or 30 mm you take off the front of the Prop...

Ive spoke to a lad that has pretty much done this conversion. He said when he went to get his propshaft shortend the company said they could make him a new one for £200, Choice of two or one piece. Just measure the length you need then tell them its t5 to atlas axle if thats what your using and they will build it with neccesary tolerances in mind.
