Default Vista Security: how good is it?

Hi guys,

Just bought myself Vista all legit as due a reformat and want to upgrade since SP1 is already out and SP2 is due out soon.

How good is its own security i.e. Windows defender? Is it adequate for your virus/firewall/spyware needs or should you install other stuff e.g. avast, zonealarm, ad-aware etc?

cheers

I run mcafee too.

Had vista since near enough day 1 I also beta tested it. I run a dual boot system so i can choose and i always end up on vista.

Not really had any problems. At the start there was driver issues on old kit but that soon ironed itself out.

Shit load of updates though but thats microsoft for you.

good stuff ebony but still wanting to know whether I should install 3rd party software such as avast and the like or leave vista to its own devices?

I mean I dont know how secure it is left to its own programs. I know for a fact its firewall is pretty decent, but how about its anti-virus/spyware detection and elimination? Does it even have in built anti virus or spyware?

cheers

Defender is spyware protection. You will need to get Anti-Virus (AVG).

cheers adrian

is it any good at blocking out spyware? I have ad-aware pro installed on mine that comes with ad-watch that is a real time scanner and nothing has ever gotten past it. Just wondering whether it actually worth installing it as I know Vista runs its programs slower than XP does

Had it running on XP for ages. Nothing got past it yet. Just remember to keep updating the preferences.
