Aberfan Petition
Aberfan Petition
"At 9.15am on October 21st 1966 144 people died when a coal tip collapsed onto a primary school in Aberfan, South Wales. 116 of the victims were children. The pictures from the time were truly horrifying. After the disaster the people of Coventry paid for a memorial playground to be built as a lasting memorial to the dead.
Now, the disgraceful Merthyr Housing Association plan to destroy the playground to build a new housing development.
An online petition to stop this development has been launched at
http://www.petitiononline.com/aberfan/petition.html
It's worth not only signing the petition but also reading the comments of the more than 3,500 people who have already done so.
It's good to know that not everybody has the expedient gold fish memories which the Housing Association seem to be endowed with.
Need I say more. Anyone who saw the pictures at the time will never forget it, and it's an absolute disgrace that they're planning to destroy this memorial now.
Please sign the petition and spread the word around.

I apprechiate what u are doing, but why do people still think an internet petition is going to do anything?!
Just cause x amount of people sign a website it doesnt mean anyone is going to suddenly take more notice or change anything.

But what exactly are you doing when u put your name on a website?
If you want to help, go out and raise some money for whatever charity they have or talk to people who can make a difference (an MP for example etc)
NO big organisation or goverment is going to take a blind bit of notice of a list of names from a website. Firstly because they could all be made up lol
Recently in my local town there was a huge march to protest about the town hall closing down. The council announced they will take no notice of a bunch of people who choose to walk down the street, BUT, if anyone wants to come to the offices and TALK about the problem and try to find possible solutions, then they are more than welcome to.
THAT is what gets results, NOT a poxy site full of lists!

Half the problem is that the wrong people are in power or have the power to make the decisions ...they sometimes forget who and why we put them there. Playing God should be left alone to the man/woman themself!

This is a memorial for those who died and should be kept untouched, exactly like every other memorial and cenotaph for those who have died tragically and needlessly. No doubt if this desecration is permitted, those businessmen and local dignitaries who condoned and encouraged it would want a memorial plaque praising their "generosity, foresightedness and concern for the community in providing this housing" - no profit motive in mind, of course!
Thanks to all who have signed.

I looked at the pics, the cemetary looks very peaceful. I didnt see the playground you mention though.
Spiky, my father died when I was 16 - I havent forgotten him at all - I think you're all getting a bit blinded by your emotions and didnt see what I was trying to say.
I'm not saying if its right or wrong to build on it but at some point you have to accept tragedies, put them behind you and move on. You can't mourn people forever. Capitalising on a tragedy however is something entirely different.
