Default Can someone explain big end and little end?

A mate went to the garage and they said 'oh your big end's away' but we're not too sure what big end and little end mean and what exactly is wrong.

Any info appreciated

Cheers

im fairly sure it refers to the end of the crank, at a pure guess i would say pulley end (bearing) but i guess its 50/50

Big ends are refering to the bearing shells around the crank.

The little ends are refering to the bearing shells around the piston.

With poor maintanance and irregular oil changes these bearing shells can wear out, there is then movement in the con rod against the crank causing the knocking noise you here. Usually the only effective solution is either replace the crank and bearing shells or have the crank re ground and fit a slightly bigger shells in.
