Default Best oil for 16v Golf GTi

As title, higher mileage car.

Its going for a service next week or the following and i want to take my own oil rather than let them put any old thing in it

How much will i need by the way? i expect theres certain size tubs of it i need to ask for?

Put Halfords 10W40 in a Mk2 8V I had from 180K miles right up to 240K - Was still on the original engine when I sold it and it never used a drop of oil, it loved the Halfords stuff, and was plenty cheaper than supposed 'branded' oil.
