Minimum Head Thickness on a YB?
As above, I'm looking to buy a spare to get fully worked, but I want to make sure there's plenty of meat left incase of future skims. What's the thinnest before it become scrap?

Going by the ford manual its 138.68mm
But plenty of people use them upto 138mm on modified engine with no issues
Findind a good cylinder head can be hard but there are out there, + loads of people think they are worth a fortune when in real terms they ain't,
I've seen some breakers commanding £600 upwards for a used head with usable deck height then add onto of that the cost of having it rebuilt, new guide, seals, ETC it becomes very costly
If you are really stuck i know of a 4x4 head with a deck height of 138.7mm that needs 1 valve and a set of guides and its in top condition no rot around the water ways
But plenty of people use them upto 138mm on modified engine with no issues

Cheers chaps! I'm asking as there's one one ebay now advertised as 138.4, so I guess its virtually on its last skim anyway (as mine is!!)
Is this to raise compression? So potentially my head on the final skim could be done again with a good thick gasket and low-ish comp pistons and would be ok?

yes it will fit, you'd need to block up the oil way in the head as the feed for turbo is different, and you'll need a complete head with camshafts as these are different also, and it will raise the comp to about 8.2:1, due to you using 2wd pistons and a 4x4 head
if you head is @138.4mm and is perfectly flat at that it will be fine to use just fit it with a Group A gasket and standard head bolts and you'll be fine
I've used a 138mm 4x4 head and ran it at 360bhp with no issues and i used the car real hard

LMFAO it you lot that put the stupid prices, there are some breakers i rang who wanted £700 for 80k heads that would be would need rebuild anyhow
And for your info i waited and got myself 2 mint 4x4 heads with no rot measuring 138.7mm and 138.65mm and both heads within 30 miles of my house and i had change from £300 from both of them.
I now have 1 stashed away for when i might need it next
yes i understand ya gotta make a living but when you account for the price of a rebuild on top of what you sell your 50k,60k,70k mile heads for, it makes it very expensive!
I look forward to the day when cosworth start re-casting them again cause the prices will come down to what they should be

168,7 and 168.65 ,,no wonder they were cheap , you must have used about 10 gaskets to stop the valves hitting
You can moan all you like about being expensive , i have over 2k of overheads to pay every month ,,not like you bedroom traders who pay nothing other than £20 a week to you mum to wash and feed you ,,lol

and the 3rd proffesional RS breaker confirming good heads are like gold dust and make £500 to £600,so there you go
lets just look at what Mr Silky16V has stated lest split the difference at £550 for a really nice head
£100 for the cams
£10 each for the inlet vaves
£20 each for the exahust valves
thats £340 just for bare parts alone, makes the bare haead casting £210
now matey is that expensive ??????????
far far from it,unfortunatly its people like this who is driving down the value of Cosworths as if the spares are worth fuck all what do you think that does to the price of your pride and joy
think about for a while

LMFAO! This is exactly what i mean you lot trying to make out heads at that height are no good, please Paul stop trying to belittle people that actually also do know something about cosworths a head at 138.7mm is still just (according to ford) in its usable deck height so don't try make out that it worth scrap value only!
Even heads at less height have no issues!
Well i'm self employed, own my own house, parents i have very little contact with, must admit i do ok for myself thanks

No No you lot keep at it i'm not knocking what you get for your heads if you can make a £££ then so be it, but i know when i was looking and rang around i wasn't prepared to pay the (what i personally though, and many people i spoke too) price that breakers wanted i waited and rang about Pm'd & emailed some people and came up with two 4x4 heads for correct money.
What i find most amusing is how Paul trys to make out that useable deck height heads aren't worth anything, and in doing so trying to belittle my knowledge about them!
Now any1 who reads this thread will think that there 137>mm or less heads are worth fuck all and end up spending a fortune on a taller head when in actual fact theres is fine!!!!!

138.7 is a huge difference to 139.0mm though!!does not sound alot but it is in terms of long term investment in an engine/head.
as for 137.0mm,that really is scrap area, your well into the valve seats at that but with money and skill its ok for a N/A aplication, but at 137.0mm you have lost your squish area for combustion.
matt, you really hate traders dont you!!your always having a go at them,i would think pauls forgot more about cosworths than most folk claim to know in this land!!
i guess over the last 3 years ive maybe had 50 cylinder heads, thats a concervative figure,of which maybe two were at 139mm,one i distinctly remember was at 139.1 and i got £700 for it to a guy in finland.
as for you waiting for cosworth to recast heads,it will never ever happen,if in your wildest dreams it did do you know how much a knew one would cost?

as you say , people do use heads below the " real usable limit " with thick gaskets and think its ok ,,then wonder why they drop a valve ,,lol,
I would never use one on a good engine below the 138.6 limit , altho i know plenty of people who have
And the reason people like Matt always have a go at traders is because the would realy love to be a real trader like us Tim , but know they havent got what it takes ,,Balls , and brains to do it ,,there happy selling shit to others and getting away with it by justifying the shit because its cheap ,,not like robbing bastard trader prices ,,lol,

ive had alot of mucking around to get a decent head to set about spending some dough on getting ported etc
i had a decent bare late 2wd head, had it skimmed, valve seats recut, pressure test sold it for £350 on ebay as not of decent height
sold the early 2wd head complete bar cams and lifters just last week on ebay again £350
and i had a good height 4x4 head complete bar cams with a burnt valve and needing new guides for £300
but then sold that head for the more or less double that without touching it
and now about to run my newly worked 2wd head

Sometimes i wonder about you Paul i think lifes too short to hold grudges & lets forget about the past wrong doing, but you always manage to try a belittle me and try your uppermost to make me out to some sorta villian against the traders. Then i realise you'll never change and i have to start disliking you all over again!
Tim & Pete my views in the post weren't directed at you in anyway, i apologise if you think they were and i hope to continue doing business with in the future

the reason is that when they are over skimmed they cut into the valve seat area and therefor weaken it, so you increase the chance of the seat falling out thus dropping a valve and destroying the engine

Matt
You tried once to make it out that i ripped you of and you failed badly
if you have somthing to say , and your mate has somthing to say then go ahead and say it ,,dont leave it up to people to think im a bad fella ,,let them make there own minds up with the facts ,,but you wont because you tried and failed
So please say what you feel i have done to you that was wrong and lets see what the people on here think
Thats the reason i have a problem with you Matt , I sold you a car , you came you drove , you tested and were very very happy , you even sold the car on for a lot more than you paid me for it , your moan ( if i remember correctly ) was i prommised you a load of piccs and reciepts of the rebuild ) when in fact i never said anything of the sort , the bloke who built the car said this when i called him and asked him to come over so you could chat with him about the car rather than me as he was the one who built it , I gave you a massive file of paperwork with the car and that was that , i never new anything about the other stuff until you called me and asked me to ask my mate when he was going to send it , the fact that he couldnt find it wasnt my problem , but even tho it wasnt my fault i was very sorry about it and told you so
The first i knew you wernt happy was about 2 years later when for no reason on a post very much like this you suddenly posted that i was a wanker and i somhow ripped you off
so come on ,,tell the world why your not happy
I bet this doesnt go any further

I bet this doesnt go any further

well if your happy for people to make there own minds up about me why put what you did ,,you obviously want people to suspect im a dodgy fooker
I have a good reputation Matt , Im not perfect by a long way , but i am fair and will try to help anyone who isnt happy .
I again am very sorry you feel i wronged you in any way and honestly would have done what i could to have made it right , but not knowing you were unhappy until your post aprox 2 years later made it impossible for me to do anything ,
Paul
