The market share is going to be something like this..... (ignoring people who just randomly buy stuff)......
50% Canon
40% Nikon
10% Other (Pentax, Olympus, etc.)

Olympus have been in the camera game for as long as I can remember, their cameras aren't too bad (see dpreview here http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympuse510/page31.asp).
Problem is that, just like me, you're going to be in the minority with one of these. Magazines tend to test canon and nikon accessories more than others, so you're left in a bit of a lurch when it comes to finding reviews for kit to go with your camera (I have a minolta - now sony - and find it very frustrating, although sony are now more active and magazines have picked up on it).
Will you be able to take good pictures with that camera - YES, will you find its limits overnight - NO, is it a good camera - YES (see review).
Every camera has pros and cons, an olympus is a little more esoteric (bit like buying a noble instead of a ferrari), but not a bad camera in any respect
I am desperately trying not to say yes or no, decision has to be yours

LOL. No.
I came to the conclusion that the Canon was the wise choice, so I went to Warehouse express in the hope that I could get them to sell me the camera for the same price as Tesco's, Ł359.97....
http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-1666.aspx
....but they wouldn't. Then I tried Comet and they weren't interested either. So, I think I am just going to order it from there. It's a boxed product so it's bound to be OK and its Ł35 cheaper than anywhere else, thats the cost of a decent Compact Flash card, so I might aswell do that. I guess I'm getting a little carried away over Ł35!! PMSL. Call it an obsession.
I also looked at this lens......

Good idea?
There is no doubt that the Olympus E510 has some very nice features, but I certainly hear what was said above about popularity etc.

Just about to click confirm on the order!
If anyone wants one, I am 99.9% certain that you cannot by an EOS 400D from ANYWHERE in the UK any cheaper (unless you have contacts), believe me, I have looked and looked and looked some more.
Delivery is a fiver and if you enter this code TDX-CLHD in the vouchers box, you get Ł5 off, so the total cost of a 400D, 2gb card and delivery is Ł359.82.
Call me a penny-pincher!!

Christian,
Im dont know if I should go for the Sony a200, can get it for Ł315 through a friend or the deal you got from Tesco. The reason the Sony appeals more to me is the built in anti shake.

That is a major advantage , look at the price difference between a "normal" and VR/IS lens to find out how much you will save per lens.
But, as said before, you'll be one of 6% of people who buy sony, as opposed to 44% who buy canon and 33% who buy nikon.

The a200 is fairly recent (released in Jan 08 iirc). Reviews I've seen so far have been pretty positive.

I would be sure that a lot of people that buy these camera's never get the full benefit off them.

Frog, I take it there is no problem getting lenses for the sony that the average user would want? I think that for me having the anti shake would be better and I would see more benefit than a choice of 4000000 lenses for a canon that I probably wont ever use.

I have a minolta 7d (now owned by sony) and benefit from anti-shake with all my lenses, even a 50mm I've had for 20 years

Testing the future
seconded. i am still holding out against my desire for a dSLR having bought a fuji bridge camera in the last year. my missus says she really likes that though, so may be able to palm her with it while i get a proper one (until she puts her magpie like eye on that)

Christian, where did it say about the free CF card - didn't notice it anywhere?

Wasn't 100% certain if you were joking or not
Hmm, maybe I missed the CF card (or missed out!) - will see what I get, but as Sod's law usually applies to anything I do...... lol

I went out today and bought the Sony A200 kit from my mate in PC World, I got it and a 2GB memory card for Ł330. I also bough a 22" HP monitor to go with it! Chuffed to say the least, got the battery charging now and then will give it a blast.

Right guys, more help needed. Didn't want to start another thread as this thread hopefully makes a good resourse for others wanting to get into DSLR, though my terrible descision making ability probably shouldn't be inflicted upon anybody!!
Now, moving on from the purchase of the camera, what do you hobby DSLR guys carry with you? Obviously if you're going to shoot a very specific thing, you'll know what to take, but if you're just out and about for example, what lenses and kit do you carry? You don't take all your kit with you everywhere you go, do you??!!
Also further to this, camera-bags, what do you use? I don't really want to look like an anorak, but want to have something that can contain the kit that I should be carrying.
Tripod? Whats good? I see you can spend a fortune on those too, surely a tripod is a tripod within reason? So a reasonably good one should do it?
Flash? Filters? I have heard people mention a type of filter that you can leave on most of the time as it can serve as a lens protector too. Is that true?

OMG Stay with engines and cars mate. You are better off there
When i have the 300D with my i always take my lowepro bag with me with 1 external flash (or wtf the name is) my std 18/55 lens and extra cards and accu. Problem is its not a cam that you have for a few snapshots. So you always end up with a shitload of stuff. So buy a big bag and a good tripod. Think manfretto is one of the best? Don't know if you have that make on the other side of the channel.
