Default Camshafts...a few questions

Right have been looking around on the net in my spare time about what options there are for the focus and what particular cams to go for i.e. sports, supersport, fast road, ultimate road etc etc and I have a few questions. Car is the Focus in my sig 1.8 Zetec already with induction, exhaust, st manifold, decat, bluefin.

1) Would you go for a fast road cam working approx say 1500-6500 or a higher spec cam working from say 2000/2500-7000+? Bearing in mind the focus hits the limiter at 7k and when I am booting I generally change at 6400-6500rpm.

2) If cam manufacturers recommend you to use their spring kits with certain cams, should you?

3) Piper and Kent seem to be the main ones over here but I've also noticed Mountune and Crower (crower seem to be very good from what I've seen). What do people think of Mountune then?

4) Would you rather buy second hand or brand new (not reprofiled). After a few experiences I've had with tuning the focus using 2nd hand parts its sort of left me scared of going second hand for something as major as cams and would rather be safe and pay rrp than potentially fuck everything up and ruin a perfectly good head and/or block

Cheers guys!

normally you can only get away with fast road cam on a std engine...most of the time anything above that like a rally cam or something needs valve cutouts IIRC.

If its a 1.8 zetec you should see a good gain by putting the 2litre cams in there and changing the maf sensor to a 2ltr one (bigger bore internally). That can give you a good gain and won't cost too much...even if you buy new cams from gaybay or ford.

As for the aftermarket kits you're going to have to contact the companies and ask if they require valve cutouts for certain cams....sometimes you can run ultimate road style cams without modifcation of pistons but it varies between manunfacturers...so best advice is top get on the blower and ask what you can run on std engine

cheers for that mate.

the thing is in regards to the zetec 1.8/2.0 blacktop engines. the mafs and cams used for the 1.8 and 2.0 are identical. Its only the older silvertop engines as used in the XR2is, escort GTis etc etc that you can extract more power by using 2.0 items. The blacktops dont work this way.

You can run kent and piper supersports/ultimate road cams without any other mods according to their sites but these work high up the rev range thats why I'm more inclinded towards a milder cam to start working sooner and to be at its peak whilst in the rev range that I have. These ultimate/super cams tend to work over 7000rpm which is a bit pointless since I have a 7k rev limit and I dont even go up that high anyway like I said earlier.

you never stated blacktop....ignore what I wrote about that then.

Although the aftermarket cam stuff still aplies...get on the blower and ask each company which cam(s) you can run....then pick the laryest one

sorry mate I thought you would know that the Focus and Mondeo from 1998 onwards dont use the silvertop

Everyone seems to be saying though pick the wildest cam you can as the mild ones have fuck all torque below 4000rpm and their powerband is very very narrow.

also what do people think of mountune on here?

general vibe seems to be they're very good? I can get a new set of stage 2 mountune cams from mountune direct for £350 I think
