id do as already said.take stat out and run up to temp.
id also take hoses of radiator and flush out out with a hose and just make sure your getting a decent flow out of it and aint blocked.
i take it youve run it for a while with the cap off to make sure all airs out the system?

hi m8, im having exactly the same issues at the mo (see my thread, cossie boiling water), it drives fine then all of a sudden, if sitting in traffic for more than a min, loads of steam comes out of the bonnet vent. almost look like its on fire!!!!
mine is also hunting when its warm. infact i have all the same symptoms as you.
done some checks, head gasket seems fine, and no traces of oil in water or white mayo anywhere in engine. thought it was my fans not cutting in in traffic, but my fans are working. you can test this buy putting the air con on, they should come on about 30 secs later.
i too took of the cap and couldnt see fook all there was so much steam.
had a good poke around underneath the return rad hose was rock hard with pressure and v hot. felt the inflow rad pipe and it was barley warm.
have to felt the hoses for temp difference.
im just letting the old girl cool off then im gna whip out the thermostat, and give it a go.
i cant believe we are having identical problems, thought i was the only one. only had the car 5 days!!!! but it has been sitting for 18months. so its bound to be a bit stiff.
i'll let you know how i get on. have you tried your stat yet??

ive just taken my thermostat out. put it in someboiling water and nothing happened. did this twice and still nothing. its supposed to open at about 88c i think.
so ive put the pipe work back together, minus stat. gna see what happens.
only thing i cant get my head around is the hunting, it hunts at idle from about 800 to 1200 rpm. all i can think is as the temp guage is wrong, due to no water flow in the rad, the ecu,s is sending the wrong fuel mix?? i hope it sorts this problem too.
then it should run sweet as a nut.

you can have a head gasket go without effecting compression as there is several places it can go-oil to water, oil to bore, bore to water etc, if you think its a head gasket you can get a testing kit which u push into header tank, let the car warm up then thr chemical inside the kit will change colour if gasket has gone , i got told a few times my gasket hadnt gone on my old frst, i knew it had, i got odd miss fire on start up for a few seconds etc. great bit of kit though.

whilst the heads off check the water pump? and try stat like mentioned, seems as though something on the cooling system isnt operating, leaving pump and stat, good luck

the pipes will look as if there going to burst, cos basically you header (and my) tank are acting as the rad, as the thermo has 'blocked' the rad off.
did you try the thermo first before taking off the head?
i still havnt fired mine up, ad dinner and fell asleep. i will try tommrow and let you know how i get on. you a braver man than me taking the head off so soon.
