the escort is basically cut and shut saff 4wd .......it had about 2" taken out the floor pan
it uses harder bushes over the standard 4wd saff thicker anti roll bars ect
as for wieght ........ the 3dr is the lightest of the lot it weights in @ 1204 kg 204 bhp standard
Rs500 is 23 kilo heaver over the 3dr but has 227 bhp
im sure a 4wd saff with leather are heavy
same goes for the lux escort cos

Well on a design point, it is like a comparaison between the old RS4 (B5 '01) and the old M3. Some people like to show they have power (usually they can't drive, guess which car they've got above), and the others like the "quiet" look of the car, which can be transformed into a beast by pushing the right pedal (and those drivers usually knows how to drive).
I personally love the saph because it doesn't show its power, and when the guy behind you see the saph under its beast side, it hurts 10 times more than if it was with an Escort.
End of story

I have had both at the same time and the Saff is the nicer car to drive in my opinion, however the Escos is a much tighter feeling car and much more 'special' than the Saff, I love Saffs but love Escos' more, there was nothing else like it looks wise then or now.
I love opening the garage to my Escort, I used to keep all my Saffs on the drive as they just didn't make me feel the same

lol, decsions then mate. i always though the escort was far better round the twisties but wasnt sure on the high speed stuff due to aero dynamics.as for bhp the 2wd and 3dr were 204bhp the rs500 was 224 the saff 4x4 was 220 and the escort was 227.but i thought that was bt.aint a clue on st version
depends what you like and want.could you not get a well modded one for what the saff and the 10k would be?whats your saff worth? 5k or more?less?
i would also think the escort weighs more due to the wings, spoilers, thicker chassis and im not sure if the antiroll bars etc are the same?plus if you went st you have the weight of airbags, door bars maybe aircon?
tbh i love both cars but the escort turns heads more and the saff can be left places but the escy cant.

its a good question!
having now owned all Cossie models I reckon the Saphire 4x4 is a much nicer car to live with than the Escort.
Have owned standard ones and tuned ones, and the Escort Cosworth was a big disappointment. Horrible inside, not much better to drive than a good 4x4 saphire, and 3 times the price.
But a big plus point is they hold their value so well, and I would say these days its the only reason to buy one, a safe investment.
These days nothing would make me buy another Escort Cosworth, for that money they just dont add up, any decent EVO or Impreza will just blow it away in every respect (except depreciation).
However I would still buy a good Sierra Cossie at the right price, I reckon they are a cracking bargain these days, if you can find a good late model 4x4 Saphire for Ł5k buy it!
Cars I've owned in past few years include a number of Cossies, M3's, EVO's Impreza's, Type R's, Porsches etc's, so I am not biased one way or the other, I just recokon the Escort Cosworth is not as good as the price tag suggests.

escos felt claustrophobic (sp) , not as nice to drive, less practical, couldn't leave it places.
sapph is much more stable at speed IMHO.
don't regret selling my escos for a minute.
never considered selling my sapph.

Not read the replies, but will say the difference is budget, most people that favour the saff cant afford the Escos...me?I like the Escos but overpriced for a less aerodynamic car, remember the escos was a rally car SWB and downforce. For value the saff kicks its ass for a rally car the escos kicks ass for top speed runs the saff kicks ass,for i am richer than a saff owner an escos kicks ass. LOL.

but a 380 bhp escy wont be slow or unreliable and i reckon you should find one at that power at that money.450plus maybe more cash though.(fucking smilies!dunno how to use them now)
you also have to bear in mind you know where you stand with your saff mate.its possible you could buy an escy at 16k buttthen very soon have to do a grand on soemthing thats unexpected that you have already done on the saff.
but what does your heart cry for?and have you driven an escy for more than 5 mins?

Two very different cars. I have had all versions of the cosworth range bar the 3 door, and have driven a few of them, I still say a saff is a great great car, especially in 2wd as they are ballistic and tough for not lot of cash... But drive a nice Escos and there is no comparison, for anything other than long motorway or duel track blasts, an Escort PISSES on a saff/ 3 door in the handling stakes. I am a long time rear wheel drive affectionado, and always used to rip on my mates for having 4x4 cossies, but in the real world of shit roads, deisel spills, british climate and all the other factors, a 4x4 Escort will murder any other cossie 95% of the time.
Depends what you want the car for, try a small turbo car, they are unbelivably good out of the box, don't listen to all the "got to be big turbo" brigade, they talk bollocks ( I know, I used to be one of them!) as a good 300BHP ST Escort will be a far far better fast road car, boost at 1900RPM and full overboost by 2600RPM!!! .. And MSD are working on a tunable ST package as we speak ( well they will be doing when I give them my car back!).
I love saffs, but just try a good Escort, you won't look back... Have to disagree on the bodywork front though, they do rust, a lot, front arches, tailgate, filler cap on BT models, sills, so make sure you check them properly.
Feel a lot stiffer and far more planted on the road IMHO, you can really feel the aero package working. Great cars, again a lot will say they are an overpriced saff, but they are a 90's Icon ( just like all of the cossies IMHO) and still get compared to todays performance cars, and if you get a nice one you will not loose money on it, bar the running costs.
My choice? Buy an Escort and hang on to your saff!!

depends on where you are likely to be leaving it mate but a saff is a better option for that side of things.unless covered in tigerstripes! lol

tbh kev take in what wil has put.he does talk sense.including the st stuff.i used to be a big turbo is best person.(well still am sort of)but a well tuned st is just as good if not better.
i had only driven my 4x4 saff and a few 2wd saffs and 3drs till last year when i drove an escort.and i used to be of the thinking that as the 4x4 gear was all the same that the escort was just alot of money for its looks.but upon driving one they are totally different beasts.so much better round the twisties that i was suprised. see if you know someone who will let you drive one for a few hours on different roads and then make your decision

ford ran a group a sierra next to the group a escort in testing when the escort was new and the escort was faster all round, and thats what matters, i can't tell much differance when pootling about but when driving along lanes fast the escort out does the sierras
i have had,no sierra handles better than a escort cosworth imo and that includes road
cars and rally, the body kit on a escort cos is designed to keep it planted which is what
you want in rallying, sustained high speed is not what its about.
i see escort cosworths for sale @ the same money as new ones cost in the early 90's
thats amazing for a 90's ford

I love the escort cossies. They just look so mint. I know a few people who have them or had them. Some say they are mint and drive very well and others say they are horrible to drive. If i was you i would go out in a few and make up your mind. Can you not go to a garage like junction 28 and road test one.

theres no getting away from the fact the escort is a great looking car
but the reason the cosworth was so great was the fact it was made in the sierra imo
weather it be a 3-door or the saph the sierra is the 1 imo
the way i look at it..........................drive a run of the mill say 2.0l twin cam gls sierra and drive a 1.6 ghia escort mark 5
and youll see the sierra is the better car all be it the run of the mill
at the end of the day an escort cosworth will always be an ESCORT
where a sierra no matter what the model is a much better place to be

When I had my old Escos corner weighted it came in at 1350kg with a 1/3rd of a tank of fuel.
Would always have the escos over the saph on looks alone.

I got my Escort Cosworth purely because I'd always wanted one, for me the best looking car there is.
Drivability I would tend to agree they aren't that great standard and build wise basically they are as shonky any other Ford from the era but there is just something about the Esc Cos that is special and worth having and putting up with where as I never feel I could say that about a Saph..
I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder

but a sierra cosworth is a fast engine in a pretty much normal shell, the sierra shell could have become the 2.0l twin cam or a cosworth, where as the escort cossie was a one off shell used omly for an escos, how can you compare it to a 1.6 fwd?

you can have a drive of mine, 400 BHP with anti lag and riding on coil overs, you won't be wanting too keep your saff after, i can guarantee that mate.....theres no comparison believe me, and i have owned both before any one asks.......

i mean build quality,dash layout,ride,etc
what has an esco shell got except a sierra floorpan, strut supports that makes it any diffrent?
i dont mean the arches etc as said itsa nice looking car
also for such a diffrent car???they rust in all the same places a normal escort do so how so diffrent chassis wise?
