I use a Canon EOS 10d....Its a 3 year old camera but tbh i prefered the feel of it to the newer ones....its personal preferance i think.
The trick to good pictures is working out how the camera works....its all in the right lens, shutter speed setting ect.................. Tricky to learn but once you have it you can tell the difference

EOS400D here also. Using the regular 18-55 lens, have also just bought the Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6di (recommended by Graceland )
All good so far, will be using it at Snetterton next weekend

go for the 350d or 400d.
But the standard lens is pretty useless for taking rally pictures.
in my opinion the canon 70-200mm lens is excellent for motorsport pictures.
You have four options here
F4 with or without image stabiliser, and f2.8 with or without stabiliser.
You can go for non canon lenses but usually these are slower to focus, and you really dont want this when taking pictures of cars flying by.
