I just bought a Golf GTi that came with a Cat 1 clifford, but the button markings on the remote have worn off, not good for someone who's never used it before
Could someone (most likely offhand which is the reason i posted) tell me what the buttons do please?

Top right is lock / unlock (turn alarm on / off) and bottom right will be boot release (if hooked up)
the others on the left will have * and ** on them but fuck knows what they do, I bought a car with the same but have no idea what they do!

Do you know which Clifford you have?
The remote you have is a companion remote & the standard functions are:
Top right = Arm / Disarm (you should here 2 chirps for arm & 1 for disarm) anything different is a faul warning eg 4 chirps is bonet / boot open.
Pressing Both top buttons is silent arm / disarm for late nights & early mornings (2 flashes is on & 1 is off)
The Concept 300 (cat1) & some of the range used 2 companion remotes so there may be no master remote.

The Concept 300 had 2 Companion remotes & no Master remote.
If you only have the one remote it may be a good idea to CLEAR all remotes then re program the one you have so nobody else will have a remote that works your car!
Is the valet code on the back of your instruction manual?

The Valet code is important as it will allow you to over ride the Clifford in an emergancy, eg broken remote - droped it down the grid etc
It also allows you to access the programable features.
To check it is the correct code: or emergancy overide
Find the valet switch which has 2 small rubber buttons, one smooth & the other has a raised X. This should be someware on your dashboard.
The X button is for the number and the smooth button is like pressing (enter)
You must have the key in the ignition & turned to the fully on position.
If your code was 1234 this would be X (enter) then XX (enter) then XXX (enter) then XXXX (enter)
If you do this with your code the Clifford LED should flash to confirm.
To clear all remote controls
If all is ok you will need to do the same again but after the led flashes you need to press and hold the X button on the valet switch until the LED lights up and stays on then
press the smooth (enter) button twice....... (wait & you should here 2 chirps)
Then press the X button 6 times...... wait and you should here 2 chirps to confirm.
Turn the ignition key off. (your remote will no longer work)
To program remote back in
Ignition on
Enter you valet code into valet switch.
Press & hold X button until LED comes on.
1 press of smooth button.....wait for 1 chirp
1 press of X button then press top right button on your remote twice.
Turn off ignition.
ONLY YOUR REMOTE WILL NOW WORK.
If you have any problems you can PM me and I will talk you through it when I am at work tommorow. (9 til 5.30)
