Default problem with ipod

I have a 5th gen Ipod video and i have a problem. I disconnect from my pc the correct way but i cant seem to get rid of the firewire connections are not supported screen. My ipod has now become totally useless. Non of the buttons seem to work and it stays on the firewire connections are not supported. I have tried resetting it via holding the centre button and menu together and it doesnt reset either. There is nothing i can do to it.

screen says:
firewire connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect the usb cable provided.

press centre to dismiss.

Cant press "centre" because nothing works, no buttons, no menu screen nothing, even tried sliding the "HOLD" switch back and forth a few times. All i can do is connect to pc to charge. Cant use it via headphones or see menu screen or playlists....

Nick

I have tried all the ideas i have been given, re-installed the software numerous times and even tried the 5 R's a few times - no luck...

Looks like i have a dead Ipod...

unless anyone else has any ideas...
