Default 4x4 Driving - Santa Pod - Veterans???

May go to the pod this weekend weather depended but just wanted to ask a few questions if I may

First up what tyres would you use I have a set of TR1 Road Tyres that double up for my track wets and a set of 888’s which again double up for my track Slicks/dry tyres, now I know if its raining I will want the Road tyres but if its dry do I still stick with the road tyres or use the 888’s as I know the 888’s are the nuts on track but I wont be able to get much heat into them before running up the strip “and my cars only 330hp and 4wd so I cant do no big burn outs to warm them up”

Also I have seen in the past people saying they let air out of there tyres to make the car grip more, is this true, what tyre pressure did you find optimal and for what conditions?

also my suspension is fully adjustable and while I wouldn’t want to mess about with the height they do have 12 different stiffness settings so should I be making them Stiff or Soft or try and find a happy medium

Im also getting TRAMP on the car if i launch it at say 4 to 4.5K its queit bad and thna at 5ish the other day it wasnt as bad, is there a particular reason for this I.E. what Rpm I am launching at ect, I don’t know that’s why im asking

Im a total Novice and have never been to the pod or ran my car at anything like this ever so please bear that in mind with your replies “try not to flame me to much”

Thanks for your time

Ben

If its wet you wont be running so that problem is solved, Use the 888's. I'll try and get up there if you go I know a little about drag racing

just enjoy it ben and dont worry anout the wobbly legs you get when you first pull up.you will be fine

Yes dont worry about ALL the people watching you on that line waiting to pop the clutch with your wobbly legs.

Release your clutch when the bank of three oranges comes on as by the time you have done seen the orange lights, sent the message to your foot to let off the clutch it will be on green!

Run the rear suspension on the softest setting.

Be careful of the tramp, do EVERYTHING you can to avoid this, as the shock loads from this WILL bust the rear diff's CWP . I wouldn't worry about tyre pressures at this stage, as it is your first time, so just enjoy yourself.

If you want to achieve a good time, remove EVERYTHING out of the car you can unbolt (will make the car faster as well as being easier on the transmission) - this includes running with as little fuel as you can, as every litre is 1kg, so no point in running with a full tank of fuel, as that is almost like having another person in the car!

If you feel ANY vibrations through the steering while accelerating - call it an end IMMEDIATELY, as this will be the front CV joints / spider (needle-roller bearings) have collapsed and you will need to be able to limp the car home.

Put the rear on the softest setting... Rev the car when trying to launch when the 2nd yellow bulb comes on.. over 5.5k the engine will change tune every so slightly... rev for one/two seconds allowing it drop down about 1000-500rpm before revving again.. try and aim for between 5000 -5500rpm or there abouts...

When you want to set off release the clutch when your rpm is revving upwards then floor the throttle. This hopefully will prevent bogging down off the line..

If you haven't gave it enough RPM you will bog down.. Give it too much and you'll spin the front wheels... get it just right and a don't fuck a gear change then you'll get a 12sec qtr without a doubt!

And if your gearbox breaks then don't blame me!

What rear diff mount are you running? The tramp from the rear sounds like it is knackered / on its way out

dont go on the lights, let them hit green and then ready yourself and set off when you are ready, going for the green will add pressure

I'd still get that looked at, maybe beam bushes? shouldn't have any tramping at all.

If it is tramping bad when you launch you will break your rear diff, there is alot more grip at the pod than on the road. My mate did this in his 2wd saff with a knackered diff mount, stripped every tooth off the crown wheel

im hoping with 330hp and 4wd on a 40/60 split its about 198hp to the rear diff and it is an uprated quaife

will be a little disapointed if it does break

the quaife bit does not remove the problem, the weak CWP and planets.... these are what will break.

And don't just sidestep the clutch, make sure you have wound the transmission up before you really go for it or you will break it, simple. As you stage, keep the clutch nipped, and hold the car on the handbrake to stop it rolling forwards, then when you launch the car has no slack in the transmission to lash..... , if you imagine all the little tolerances between splines, Cv joints, gears etc if you just sidestep the clutch you WILL break somthing eventually, just as Mad YUM ... I snapped a front shaft on std small turbo power on the road, as I came off the clutch quite sharp to get across a busy junction

Don't worry about the green, just get yourself set then launch, won't start timing until you break the beams
