gearbox spacer plates
may sound like a stupid question because they obviously need them but what purpose does the metal plase serve between the box and block??

I would hazard a guess that it is to do with vibration.
When alloy and steel are together there might be a tendency for the alloy to get a bit worn if the par move even slightly in relation to each other, this could also lead to the alloy cracking around the bolt holes, just my theory.
