Fault Finding
Pinking Noise and Knocking Under Load

Pinking, (high pitch explosive sounds) which can be the result of several problems with vehicle systems, is where the fuel and air mixture is ignited at the wrong time, sometimes called pre-ignition. Pinking must be rectified as soon as possible as it is detrimental to the engine, often causing damage to the pistons and other engine components if left unchecked .
The ignition timing of the vehicle must be checked against the manufacturer's specifications and the overall condition of the entire ignition system must be inspected. An ignition system fault is one of the most likely causes of the engine pinking. If the vehicle has covered a lot of miles, then carbon build up on the pistons, valves and combustion chamber could also be the cause of the pinking.
This generally affects older vehicles, where a de-coke was expected fairly regularly. The picture shows a piston that has had a decoke. With the advances in engine, fuel and oil technology the need to de-coke an engine has gone.
An engine strip-down will be required in order to carry out a de-coke of the engine - ensure that your diagnosis is correct before proceeding.
Ensure that the correct type of spark plugs are fitted - check that the number on the side of the plug matches those recommended by the vehicle's manufacturer. Incorrect spark plugs will have a drastic effect on the overall running of the engine and possibly cause damage.
Fuel has a certain shelf life. Old or contaminated fuel will have an effect on the running of the engine - one result being pinking. Check that you have put the correct grade of fuel into the vehicle. Octane ratings are used to refer to the burning properties of the fuel.
Check that the inlet manifold is not leaking and also the associated vacuum pipes that will be present around the inlet manifold. Inspect these pipes for splits, cracks and general deterioration - replace as necessary.
There may be a problem with a blocked fuel injector - use injection cleaner in the fuel tank to clean through the system. Injectors only move 0.15mm off their seat - dirt can easily block an injector. Maintain manufacturer's service schedules with regard to fuel filter replacement.
Do not run an engine with an injector removed.
The injection system as a whole may have to be checked for faults, as some faults within the system could manifest themselves by pinking.

I had rick off here mapping it the other week and he was retarding timing but doesnt seem to clear, was just thinkin about the pistons as when i got them they had to be machined coz they were unfinished crowns but dont know if the engine place done them properly.

20K+ Super Poster.
ANY high spot on the crown can cause pinking as it remains hot enought to prematurely ignite the fuel, they have these as std on some diesel engines, a pocket in the centre of the piston with a SPIKE sticking up.
Apart from that as said causes, really need to be running V power or similar high quality fuel, even TESCO99 is very good.
I would check the above and cam timing, as this can also cause it.
