Well he hasnt has he?

Thats becuase of 1 of 3 possibe reasons:

1) He was good enough and got away with it

2) It wasnt actually him

3) He thinks he got away but the net is closing in.

My take on that:

3) No chance IMHO, if IB havent identified anyone by now they arent going to, and I doubt they actually devoted much resource to it anyway realistically.

2) Seems very likely

1) Seems fairly likely

My money is on option 2 to be honest.

Well with server r00t access and a few phone calls it wouldnt take them long to find out whom it is.

Not true, having total access to everything on the server is of NO use to them if the hacker used an anonymous proxy to access the site and log in as a moderator and delete posts, you would need to be the authorities to stand any chance at that point IB would have NO ability to find out who was using that proxy, so thats exactly where the trail would go cold, trust me I know this from firsthand experience of being IB's side of the fence on this, Ive helped the police when someone hacked a server as I was partially responsible for looking after, and you get to a point where you simply cant find out anymore from you end and all you can do is tell the police who to talk to next down the line to proceed any further.

Theres always a trail, the only way a trail can go cold is if a companies server gets hijacked and then its liquidated, ie doesnt exist anymore.

IB could go to the authorities if needed.

Its not that big a thing as its unsensitive data, but still, having been on the recieving end kinda i know theres no such thing as anonymous proxies as such.

IB could go to the police, yes, what im saying is they couldnt go any further themselves than to the first anonymous proxy link in the chain, and given that they have no proof of any crime being comitted (bearing in mind at this stage its PERFECTLY possibly it was in fact just a moderator on the rampage pissed or whatever) they arent going to be going to the police over it as the police would just laugh at them for being fussed over something so irrelevant.

There really is realistically nothing that they can do, if the person had uploaded a load of child porn or given away clues to them being involved in a murder or somehing, then fair enough the police would throw resources at it, but they arent going to over someone deleting some shit threads in a muppet room.

yup i agree.

hey your a better programmer than I, is it possible to make a software proxy on the same server that your forums hosted ?

As then you could link moderator accounts to your software proxy, giving individual mod accounts a specific ip.

a. only this ip will log you into the cp, so you know whos accounts been hacked.

b. It stops people forging an ip to appear to be someone else, as they wont know what the assigned ip would be.

Ofcourse you could use a hash instead of an ip i suppose but thats not as tight...

As much as a strange fucker Simon is I don't think he hacked the forum. Clever but not that clever. Only reason he is banned is because Mike BumBird don't like him....

That would be a pointless way to do it, IMHO the best way to know what moderator account did what, is a dot matrix printer attached to the server, and everytime a moderator action occurs, print a line out saying who what and when, no matter what access a hacker ends up with, unless they are in the buidlign they cant remove the logs, thats what I have done in the past for things that are TRUELY important to keep track of, as no hacker can delete soemthing you have a paper copy of, but anything on the server or in a database etc is potentially accessable ultimately!

The thing is Phil I have met Simon's wife and kids and they seem pretty ok to me.

Simon had a username called pf hacker and he used that on his usual ip address.
But that ip is an open proxy accessible to anyone on the internet.
So it should have only been a 24 hour ban for having two usernames.
Can you tell me how you came to the conclusion that Simon was the hacker?

Would love to know.....
Er, read the post.
Er... I have?

Where is your concrete evidence that he did.

Anyone can create a <insert forum address here> hacker account. Doesnt prove they did.

IB are investigating, I believe, the source of the hack and nothing has yet been communicated to us.

Seems you know more than the webteam.. were you the hacker?

Maybe I change your account name to James-W PF Hacker to prove it was you?

Thought not.

AFAIK:

Simon registered the account "PF Hacker" or whatever it was called, long AFTER the forum was hacked, just to take the piss out of MikeR for accusing Simon of doing it.

The account and the actual hacking have no connection at all as far as im aware, but obviously James-W knows different somehow

I don't see where I have said that, that account does have anything to do with the hacking.
I need to lay of the whiskey, i can't see straight today.
